About the Role

The Director of Business Development is a strategic business leader responsible for developing and executing business development strategy for an assigned therapeutic area, customer segment, or geographic region with new business sales accountability. This role combines significant personal sales responsibility AUD$10-15M/year with leading a team of 3-6 BD professionals and accountable for sales cycle management. The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional strategic sales vision, ability to influence at senior levels, and proven capability to develop market-leading strategies that drive sustainable revenue growth and competitive positioning.

Responsibilities

· Strategic Business Sales Leadership – Develop and execute comprehensive business development strategy for assigned therapeutic area, customer segment, or geographic region; Build and manage portfolio of AUD$10-15M in actively developing opportunities; Drive revenue growth, market expansion, and competitive positioning within the assigned business unit

· New Business Sales Management – Own full new sales responsibility for assigned business units; Manage sales budget allocation, resource deployment, and profitability targets; Develop business case analyses for strategic BD initiatives and market opportunities; Monitor key sales metrics and ensure accountability

· Senior-Level Client & Strategic Relationships – Manage relationships with enterprise clients and C-suite sponsors; Develop strategic partnerships that position Emerald as a preferred long-term partner; Lead high-value contract negotiations and complex deal structures

· Team Leadership & Development – Lead and coach team of 3-6 BD professionals toward sales targets and strategic objectives; Develop team members for advancement to director-level positions; Build high-performing culture and drive talent retention

· Strategic Market Analysis & Competitive Intelligence – Conduct comprehensive market analysis and competitive landscape assessments; Identify emerging opportunities, market trends, and competitive threats; Develop market strategies that inform company positioning and long-term growth

· Major Proposal & Deal Leadership – Lead or co-lead development of major strategic proposals and RFP responses; Coordinate cross-functional teams (clinical, operations, finance, regulatory) to deliver competitive proposals; Close complex, high-value deals with significant strategic impact

· Industry Representation & Partnerships – Serve as senior company representative at industry conferences, association boards, and strategic partnerships; Build visibility and credibility in key markets; Support company brand positioning and market leadership

· Executive & Leadership Engagement – Provide regular market insights and business performance updates to executive leadership; Participate in strategic business planning and annual sales goal-setting initiatives; Support board-level discussions on market opportunities and competitive positioning

About You

· Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Business, or related field

· MBA or advanced degree (MSc, PhD) strongly preferred

· 7-9 years of professional experience in sales, business development, or related field

· 5-7 years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or CRO industry; 2-3 years of significant leadership experience managing BD teams and budgets

· Advanced senior-level relationship management and enterprise sales capabilities

· Exceptional team leadership, talent development, and people management skills

· Strong financial acumen, sales cycle management, and business planning expertise

· Excellent communication and executive presence; ability to influence at all levels; Proficiency with Salesforce CRM and business analytics; Technological proficiency including Microsoft Office packages

· Ability to see the big picture, yet still focus on detail and quality of work

· Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments
