Day in the Life of a Director, Clinical Systems Engineering

Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Delivery

  • Lead the EHR implementation and engineering team, including lead analysts and technical specialists, setting priorities, assigning work, and holding the team accountable for quality and timelines.
  • Direct large-scale EHR migrations and consolidations across multiple states and care models, owning the overall delivery plan, sequencing, go-live readiness, and post-go-live stabilization.
  • Provide oversight of requirements, specifications, and build artifacts produced by the team, ensuring they are complete, traceable, and audit-ready before sign-off.
  • Govern scope, change requests, and downstream impact decisions, and escalate trade-offs with clear cost, risk, and effort recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Coach and develop team members, building career paths and technical depth across the team, and create the structure that lets senior analysts lead workstreams independently.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point and technical counterpart to EHR vendors, trading partners, and internal IT, including SOW review and vendor performance management.

Technical Oversight: Interfaces, Integration, Data, and Automation

  • Lead highly skilled technical teams across data, interface, and automation disciplines, with enough hands-on depth to challenge designs, assess vendor proposals, and unblock complex technical issues.
  • Oversee the interface and data exchange portfolio, including HL7 v2 and FHIR messaging, laboratory and toxicology results, e-prescribing and EPCS, PDMP, pharmacy and dispensing systems, and reporting and analytics feeds.
  • Own data migration strategy and quality for system transitions, including extraction, mapping, validation, and reconciliation of clinical, dosing, and billing data.
  • Oversee eligibility, claims, and remittance transaction flows (270/271, 837, 835) in partnership with the revenue cycle team.
  • Direct RPA and workflow automation initiatives that reduce manual work across EHRs and operational processes, including tool selection, governance, and maintenance standards.
  • Establish monitoring standards for interface queues and error handling and lead root-cause analysis and remediation of major incidents.

Experience We're Looking For

  • Proven record leading end-to-end EHR migrations or consolidations in a multi-site or multi-state healthcare organization.
  • Experience leading large groups of technical teams, including data, interface, and automation specialists.
  • Strong technical foundation in healthcare interoperability (HL7, FHIR, X12) and data migration, with the credibility to lead technical staff.
  • Behavioral health, SUD, or OTP experience strongly preferred, including familiarity with 42 CFR Part 2.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in health informatics, information systems, computer science, healthcare administration, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred. Equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience will be considered.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in clinical application configuration, systems analysis, or EHR implementation required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of direct people leadership or formal project leadership experience required.
  • Demonstrated ownership of end-to-end requirements gathering for clinical or enterprise software initiatives required.
  • Hands-on configuration experience with at least one enterprise EHR or practice management platform required; behavioral health, substance use disorder, or OTP platform experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting multi-site EHR implementation, consolidation, or data migration required.
  • Working knowledge of interfaces and integration (HL7, FHIR, API, SFTP) required. Demonstrated hands-on SQL experience is required and will be assessed during the interview process.
  • Knowledge of OTP and OBOT operations, including methadone and buprenorphine dispensing workflows, take-home regulations, and 42 CFR Part 2, strongly preferred.
  • Experience with a healthcare clearinghouse and familiarity with revenue cycle workflows preferred.
  • Professional certification such as CPHIMS, CAHIMS, PMP, Certified Scrum Product Owner, Six Sigma, or vendor-specific application certification preferred.
  • Ability to travel to clinic sites as required to support implementations, go-lives, and workflow assessments.
