Position: Director of Mechanical Engineering
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead and manage Raymond’s Mechanical Engineering department. This role is responsible for departmental leadership, technical quality, project delivery, staff development, workload planning, and strategic growth. The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical engineering expertise with proven leadership and management experience and the ability to develop teams, support business development, and drive successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, manage, and develop the Mechanical Engineering department in alignment with Raymond’s organizational goals and objectives.
- Assess current workloads and forecast future staffing needs based on active projects, proposals, RFPs, and business development opportunities.
- Assign mechanical engineering personnel to projects and monitor utilization to maintain a consistent and productive workload.
- Lead project teams and ensure mechanical engineering work is completed on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project and company goals.
- Provide senior-level mechanical engineering expertise on projects, including HVAC, plumbing, controls, and related building systems.
- Review drawings, specifications, calculations, reports, estimates, and fees prepared by department staff.
- Perform technical quality assurance and constructability reviews to ensure compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, and client expectations.
- Support project planning, research, preliminary design, fieldwork, and review of field reports.
- Prepare and review project reports, estimates, fees, scopes of work, and proposal information.
- Support project managers in developing proposals, including pricing, technical clarifications, scopes of work, and schedules.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, project managers, clients, and other multidisciplinary project teams.
- Monitor project progress and proactively address risks related to scope, budget, schedule, staffing, and quality.
- Support business development, marketing, client acquisition, and client retention initiatives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, project partners, and industry stakeholders.
- Identify departmental hiring needs and participate in hiring decisions and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Lead performance evaluations, career development, mentoring, and professional growth initiatives for Mechanical Engineering staff.
- Develop and implement departmental training programs to enhance technical capabilities and project delivery.
- Ensure staff have the tools, software, codes, standards, and resources necessary to perform their work effectively.
- Establish and maintain departmental standards, workflows, templates, and production practices.
- Oversee the use and management of Revit, BIM, and AutoCAD resources, including project templates and libraries.
- Stay current with mechanical engineering principles, industry trends, technologies, and applicable codes and standards.
- Provide regular updates to senior leadership regarding departmental utilization, workload, profitability, staffing, growth, and performance.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited four-year engineering program, or equivalent non-American engineering degree subject to review.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States with an active and current NCEES record.
- Minimum of 16+ years of mechanical engineering experience with an ABET/EAC-accredited bachelor’s degree, or 15+ years with a qualifying bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical engineering. Candidates with an equivalent non-American degree must have 22+ years of experience, including at least 4 years in the United States.
- Extensive experience with mechanical engineering and plumbing systems for architectural building projects, including HVAC, furnaces, boilers, chillers, VAV/CAV, packaged, split, hydronic, and VRF systems, controls, and plumbing systems.
- Proven experience managing large projects and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Trane TRACE 3D, Trane 700, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering codes, standards, design principles, and construction practices.
- Familiarity with federal design criteria, including UFC, DoD, and VA requirements, is preferred.
- Proven leadership and management experience, including workload management, staff development, project budgeting, and team leadership.
- Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Experience preparing and delivering engineering, project, and business development presentations.
- Proven ability to develop new clients and collaborate with business development and marketing teams.
- Ability to generate project fees, scopes, schedules, and workhour estimates.
- Ability to travel approximately 20% for client and company meetings.
Working Conditions:
This position includes both office and field responsibilities. Field work may require climbing ladders, scaffolds, and stairs; lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; wearing protective equipment; working around construction activities and equipment; and working indoors and outdoors in varying weather and site conditions. Some travel may be required.
