We are seeking an experienced DynamoDB Engineer to spearhead a critical multi-region migration initiative and establish robust disaster recovery capabilities for our hyperscale NoSQL workloads.
In this role, you will design and execute the migration of DynamoDB tables across AWS regions, implement Global Tables for business continuity, and lay the architectural foundation for an active-active configuration. You will work closely with application teams, author production-grade infrastructure as code, and ensure operational excellence through comprehensive monitoring and runbooks.
Req.#1087120408
Responsibilities
- Multi-Region DynamoDB Migration & DR Setup: Design and execute the migration of DynamoDB tables from us-east-1 to us-east-2. Implement Global Tables for an active-passive disaster recovery configuration, laying the groundwork for active-active migration by late 2027
- Data Modeling & Schema Design: Analyze existing table structures, partition keys, sort keys, and access patterns. Optimize data models for multi-region replication to maintain sub-millisecond query performance and minimize cross-region latency
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Implementation: Author and maintain production-grade Terraform configurations and AWS CDK (TypeScript) modules for DynamoDB resources, including tables, GSIs, capacity settings, auto-scaling, PITR, and backup vaults across both regions
- Capacity Planning & Auto-Scaling: Design and implement auto-scaling strategies for tables and Global Secondary Indexes (GSIs). Model capacity requirements for cross-region replication traffic, balancing cost efficiency with strict performance SLAs during normal operations and DR scenarios
- Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity: Implement and validate Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR), on-demand backups, and cross-region backup strategies. Create and test operational runbooks for regional failovers, RTO/RPO validation, and data consistency checks
- Operational Readiness & Monitoring: Establish comprehensive CloudWatch alarms for replication lag, throttling events, consumed capacity, and GSI health. Participate in GameDay exercises and DR drills, and document operational procedures for application teams
Requirements
- Terraform (Mandatory): Production-level authoring of DynamoDB resources, modules, and state management
- AWS CDK + TypeScript (Mandatory Baseline): Familiarity with or capability to align with the program's primary IaC standard
- Amazon DynamoDB: Deep, hands-on expertise in advanced data modeling, partition/sort key design, and access pattern optimization for hyper-scale NoSQL workloads
- Global Tables: Extensive experience setting up DynamoDB Global Tables, handling cross-region replication, implementing conflict resolution, and managing multi-region consistency models
- GSIs & LSIs: Global and Local Secondary Index design, capacity planning, backfill strategies, and projection optimization
- Capacity & Auto-Scaling: Deep understanding of on-demand vs. provisioned capacity, auto-scaling policies, target tracking, and cost optimization for massive-scale tables
- Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR): Robust backup strategies, restore validation, cross-region backup vaults, and recovery testing
- NoSQL Database Administration: Table maintenance, performance tuning, query optimization, and hot partition identification/mitigation
Nice to have
- DynamoDB Streams: Event-driven architectures, Lambda triggers, and Change Data Capture (CDC) patterns
- AWS Backup: Organization-level policies, cross-account, and cross-region vault management for DynamoDB
- Python: Adjacent tooling and automation scripting within the AWS/DynamoDB ecosystem
- Adjacent Datastores: Experience with Aurora MySQL or DocumentDB migration workstreams
- Cost Modeling: DynamoDB pricing optimization, Storage Lens, request costs, and cross-region data transfer analytics
- CloudWatch & X-Ray: Deep observability, distributed tracing, and performance analysis for DynamoDB operations
- DR Architecture: Active/passive topologies, multi-region design patterns, and handling replica lag as an operational constraint
- Enterprise Change Control: Navigating strict moratoriums, CAB processes, and production exception handling in enterprise environments
