E-commerce Manager (Shopify)

BlackboxMyCar | Remote, working Pacific hours | Full-time contractor | Senior role

About us

BlackboxMyCar is a dash cam retailer and installer based in Richmond, BC, in business for 14 years. We sell across Canada and the US through two Shopify stores, Amazon and our own install centre. We carry the leading dash cam brands alongside our own products, and we are launching a new product line this fall.

The role

You run the day to day of both our Shopify stores and everything that feeds them: product pages, pricing roll-outs, site quality, SEO and product feeds. Once the store is under control, you also take over our written website content.

We use AI to produce first drafts of pages, content and code. Your job is the part AI cannot do: knowing what is right, checking it properly, and shipping work that is correct the first time. The first 80 percent of most tasks is easy now. We are hiring for the last 20 percent: the judgment, the product knowledge and the attention to detail that decide whether something is actually done.

This is a senior generalist role. We do not expect you to know our products on day one, but we do expect you to become independent quickly and not need your work redone.

You report to our Director of Marketing and work closely with our CEO and our operations team.

What you will do

Store and site

  • Handle Shopify changes and requests from our sales, operations and support teams through one queue.
  • Build new product and content pages from our existing templates and theme, keeping the structure clean and consistent. No one-off layouts, no bloat.
  • Check that any AI-generated code actually fits how our site is built before it goes anywhere near live.
  • Test every change on phone and desktop, on both stores, before it goes live.
  • Keep a clear change log: what changed, when, why, and how to undo it.
  • Help simplify the site as we move pages off a page builder and remove apps we no longer need.
  • Contribute to site design and brand direction, working with the Director of Marketing, who has the final say.

Products and pricing

  • Keep product data accurate: specs, titles, variants, images and compatibility.
  • Roll out our twice-weekly price and promotion changes across the website, Google, Meta, email and social, and confirm every channel shows the same thing.
  • Build product pages and launch checklists for new products.

SEO and product feeds

  • Implement SEO work: page updates, redirects, and clean-up of old, translated and retired pages. Every redirect decided case by case, with the reason written down, never as a blind batch.
  • Keep Google Merchant Center and our product feeds healthy: disapprovals, missing attributes, and product URLs that affect our ads.

Reporting

  • Send a short written update every Friday: what shipped, what broke and how it was fixed, feed status, and the week's numbers, with Shopify as the source of truth.

Written website content (after the first 90 days)

  • Our CEO is laying the content foundation now: priorities, topics and the calendar. Once the store is under control, you take over running it.
  • Keep guides, buying advice, product content and blog pages accurate, current and useful, including refreshing older pages rather than only adding new ones.
  • Written website content only. Video, social posting and influencer work sit with other people on the team.
  • Write for customers first and search second. No volume for its own sake and no generic AI content.

What this role is not

  • Video production, social posting or influencer outreach.
  • Packaging or factory communication.
  • Setting prices (you roll them out; you do not decide them).
  • Running or monitoring ad campaigns (our ads specialist does this).

Must have

  • 3+ years hands-on running a Shopify store, including theme code (Liquid and CSS, some JavaScript), sections and metafields.
  • Practical e-commerce SEO: redirects, canonicals, handling retired products and translated pages, Google Search Console.
  • Google Merchant Center and product feeds.
  • Comfortable working in GA4.
  • Strong written English: you can write a product page or a buying guide a customer actually wants to read.
  • You use AI tools every day, and you can explain where they got something wrong and how you caught it.
  • You check your own work. You catch wrong specs, broken links, inconsistent formatting and claims we cannot make before anyone else sees them.
  • You understand how Shopify, SEO, product feeds and site content affect each other.
  • You take ownership of the final result, not just the first draft.
  • At least 6 hours of overlap with Pacific business hours.

Nice to have

  • Consumer electronics or automotive products (dash cams a plus).
  • A good eye for site design, UX and brand.
  • Content planning for an e-commerce brand.
  • Shopify Admin API, scripting or automation.
  • Experience moving a store off a page builder such as Shogun or PageFly.
  • Klaviyo, Gorgias or Judge.me.
  • Design skills (Figma, Canva).
  • French.

How we hire

Step 1. Short first call.

Step 2. A paid test of 2 to 3 hours on real work:

  • Fix a real product page that has planted errors, and list what you found.
  • Diagnose a product feed or product exclusion problem and write the fix.
  • For 20 old URLs, decide redirect (and where), keep, or retire, with a one-line reason for each.

Step 3. Final interview with the Director of Marketing and the CEO.

Step 4. Reference check.

What success looks like

  • 30 days: you own routine store requests and our twice-weekly price updates, with no errors reaching customers.
  • 60 days: you build product pages from templates on your own and run our SEO clean-up.
  • 90 days: you can run both stores for a full week without help, and you start taking over the written content calendar.

Working with us

  • Your own named logins; all accounts belong to the company.
  • Changes to themes, apps, checkout, domains and bulk edits go through the Director's sign-off.
  • Contractor agreement with confidentiality and ownership-of-work terms.
  • First 30 days as a trial with a review at day 30.
