• Provide technical EHS leadership and direction to manufacturing, engineering, laboratory and project teams, using risk-based and engineering-led approaches to improve controls.
• Lead the daily operation of the EHS team, directly manage the EHS Engineers, set priorities, allocate work and monitor delivery.
• Lead or support complex risk assessments involving chemical hazards, potent compounds, containment, exposure potential, equipment and process interfaces.
• Provide EHS input to capital projects, design reviews, management of change, commissioning, technology transfer and new product or process introduction.
• Provide business perspective, strategic and tactical direction to develop and implement EHS initiatives for the EHS Long Range Plan.
• Maintain a broad understanding of local, regional and global EHS regulations and practices.
• Develop and maintain site technical expertise in industrial hygiene, radiation safety and biological safety, coordinating specialist support where required.
• Triage operational EHS escalations, assess risk and urgency, coordinate the response and escalate significant matters to the Site EHS Manager.
• Coordinate incident investigations, audit readiness, corrective actions and EHS programmes, ensuring technically sound and sustainable solutions.
• Creates a safety culture4 by setting direction to reduce or eliminate operations-related injuries or accidents, damage/loss of product or equipment, and unnecessary costs by ensuring that all equipment and facilities are maintained consistent with the Environmental Health and Safety standards set by AbbVie.
• Ensure applicable AbbVie EHS standards, site procedures and legal requirements are effectively implemented within the assigned scope.
• Act as delegated backfill for the Site EHS Manager when required, while Process Safety and Environmental continue to report directly to the Site EHS Manager.

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a closely related engineering or scientific discipline. A relevant EHS qualification is advantageous.
• Relevant experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical processing or another regulated, technically complex manufacturing environment.
• Practical understanding of chemical and process hazards, risk assessment and the hierarchy of controls; experience with potent compounds, containment or occupational exposure management is advantageous.
• Experience supporting manufacturing operations, process changes, capital projects, equipment introduction or technology transfer.
• Demonstrated ability to lead people or coordinate technical teams, manage competing priorities and influence cross-functional stakeholders.
• Experience in incident investigation, audit or inspection readiness, corrective-action management and technical report writing.
• Working knowledge of industrial hygiene is preferred. Radiation-safety or biological-safety experience is advantageous, with the ability to develop formal competence in these areas.
• Strong analytical judgement, communication, project-management and problem-solving skills.
