DTCo is a Melbourne-based engineering and CAD design consultancy. Our tagline is "Bringing order to complexity", and that is what we do for clients in defence, manufacturing, food and healthcare. Our clients include Navantia, BAE Systems, Supacat, Planet Innovation, Cablex, Form Energy and Boresight.
We are defence cleared and work in AutoCAD, Inventor, SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, NX and ShipConstructor, either remotely in the client's portal or onsite Australia-wide. Our team of 15 designers and engineers is all in-house and defence cleared, with no subcontractors, and we have a funded plan to grow to 21 this financial year.
Our clients increasingly need the electrical side of a design delivered alongside the mechanical: harnesses, enclosures, power distribution and the integration of electronics into vehicles, vessels and machines, and the design of grid-scale energy storage systems and mobile power units.
This new role brings that capability in-house. You will work alongside our mechanical engineers and designers to deliver complete electromechanical design packages, from concept through to manufacturing documentation. Defence is our largest sector, so a defence background is strongly preferred.
Electrical and electromechanical design
- Design electrical systems for defence vehicles and vessels, grid storage systems, mobile power units, industrial machinery and medical and food equipment
- Produce schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules and harness drawings ready for manufacture
- Design control panels, enclosures and power distribution, including component selection and load and cable sizing
- Work with our mechanical team on cable routing, connector placement, mounting and thermal management in 3D
Integration and compliance
- Integrate sensors, actuators, motors, drives and control hardware into mechanical designs
- Design to the relevant standards, such as AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3008, IEC 60204-1, EMC requirements and defence standards like MIL-STD and DEF STAN where a client specifies them
- Prepare design reports, calculations and verification documentation, and support testing and commissioning where needed
Client and project work
- Work directly with client engineering teams, either in their systems or as part of a DTCo-delivered package
- Help scope and estimate the electrical content of quotes so jobs are priced correctly
- Review and check designs from other engineers and designers, and mentor junior staff as the team grows
Essential
- A degree in electrical, electronic, mechatronic or electromechanical engineering
- 3+ years designing electrical or electromechanical systems for products, machines, vehicles or vessels
- Hands-on experience with electrical CAD, such as AutoCAD Electrical, SOLIDWORKS Electrical, EPLAN, Zuken E3.series or similar
- Experience producing harness, panel or wiring documentation that has gone into manufacture
- A working knowledge of Australian and international electrical standards
- Comfort working with mechanical engineers in a 3D CAD environment
- Australian citizenship (required for our defence work) and able to obtain and hold a Baseline security clearance
Desirable
- Strongly preferred: a defence background, whether with a prime, an SME supplier, the ADF or Defence itself, and familiarity with defence electrical standards
- Experience in land vehicle, naval or marine electrical systems, or in battery energy storage, power electronics and DC power systems
- Programming experience or knowledge will be looked on favourably, for example PLC programming, embedded C/C++, microcontrollers, Python or MATLAB, or automating design and documentation tasks
- 3D harness routing in SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, CATIA, NX or ShipConstructor, and AutoCAD for 2D layouts
- Chartered status (CPEng) or working towards it with Engineers Australia
- $100,000–$110,000 base plus superannuation
- The chance to build and shape DTCo's electrical capability as we grow
- Hybrid working (2 days from home) and flexible hours within reason
- Varied, technically interesting work across defence, manufacturing, food and healthcare
- Support for professional development, including CPEng
- A North Melbourne office close to public transport
