Embedded Software Engineer | Aerospace & Defense

Build Software That Powers the Future of Aerospace

Apera is hiring on behalf of an established aerospace and defense organization seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support the development of advanced electromechanical systems.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex, real-world engineering challenges, developing embedded real-time software that integrates directly with hardware, sensors, actuators, and motor-control systems.

12-month contract opportunity with a hybrid schedule, requiring one week onsite per month and remote work for the remaining weeks.

You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the full software development lifecycle, from initial design and development through integration, verification, and ongoing product support.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design, develop, test, integrate, and maintain embedded real-time software for aerospace and defense applications.
  • Develop software solutions based on system and customer requirements.
  • Support hardware/software integration involving sensors, actuators, motors, and electrical systems.
  • Troubleshoot software and hardware interactions, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and execute software verification and testing procedures.
  • Collaborate with Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, and Software Engineering teams.
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, configuration management, and software releases.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including software requirements, design specifications, and verification results.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field with at least 2 years of relevant professional experience, or an advanced degree in a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded software development, real-time applications, software integration, verification, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, implementation, integration, testing, and configuration management.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex technical issues and supporting software integration.
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation and collaborate across engineering disciplines.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Nice to Have

  • Embedded software development for microcontrollers, processors, or similar computing platforms.
  • Aerospace, defense, or other safety-critical software development experience.
  • Sensor interfaces and analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion.
  • Motor-control applications, including brushless DC (BLDC) motors and resolver interfaces.
  • MATLAB/Simulink or similar model-based development tools.
  • IBM DOORS or comparable requirements-management tools.
  • DO-178/DO-178C software development and verification experience.
  • Requirements-based testing, traceability, and configuration management.
  • Hardware/software debugging using laboratory equipment and testing environments.
  • Source control, code reviews, and continuous integration practices.

Why Explore This Opportunity?

  • Work on advanced aerospace and defense technologies with real-world applications.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineering teams across multiple disciplines.
  • Contribute throughout the full software development lifecycle.
  • Tackle challenging embedded software and hardware integration problems.
  • Explore opportunities for professional growth and continued technical development.
