About the Role
We are looking for an Engineering Lead with 4 to 8 years of AI and machine learning development experience to guide the technical direction of an education technology platform. Reporting to the CEO, you will lead development of AI systems that analyze handwritten student work and help educators understand where students may be struggling.
What You'll Do
Own and improve AI and machine learning systems that use computer vision, natural language processing, and multimodal analysis to interpret handwritten student work.
Expand the platform beyond math into subjects such as English language arts and science, taking proof-of-concepts through production deployment.
Strengthen evaluation datasets, model monitoring, and performance observability.
Coordinate with an external full-stack engineering team to communicate priorities, uphold technical quality, and maintain alignment.
Explain technical roadmaps and complex concepts to the CEO, grantors, board members, and other non-technical stakeholders.
What We're Looking For
4 to 8 years of hands-on AI and machine learning development experience, including building original models, creating datasets, and independently experimenting.
Experience developing end-to-end AI products from proof-of-concept through deployment; API integration experience alone is not sufficient.
Experience deploying in-house models, running inference, and integrating large language models.
Knowledge of cloud infrastructure and MLOps, such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Modal.
Experience managing external engineering contractors or vendors and communicating technical plans to non-technical leaders and partners.
Familiarity with Python, FastAPI, Django, React, Datadog, Weights & Biases, Hugging Face, vLLM, SGLang, LiteLLM, Unsloth, structlog, pytest, Locust, Git, GitHub, Jira, and Notion.
Education technology experience is helpful, as is experience in social impact sectors such as healthcare or the environment.
Ability to work US time zones; candidates in Europe should be willing to work US hours.
Compensation & Benefits
Annual salary range: $200,000 to $250,000 USD. Visa sponsorship is not available; candidates must already have work authorization in their country of residence.
Location
Remote within the United States.
