Engineering Manager

Teamwire
Posted 4 hours ago
🌍Europe🏠Remote📁Engineering & Development
Is this job info correct?

Teamwire is a secure Business Messenger built for mobile collaboration and mission-critical communication.

We provide a secure alternative to WhatsApp for enterprises, the public sector, and healthcare.

More than half of the German police use Teamwire to complement their digital radio communication.

Our product is designed for operational scenarios involving police, fire brigades, disaster response organizations, and other mission-critical environments, where reliability, security, and speed really matter.

Our organization is fully remote and international. Today, our Engineering team consists of around 20 people working across Android, iOS, Backend, Desktop/Web and QA.

Our core stack includes Kotlin (Android), Swift (iOS), Python (Backend), and TypeScript with React, Node.js, and Electron (Desktop/Web).

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day execution and continuous improvement of this Engineering organization.

You will report to the Head of Product & Engineering, who sets the broader direction and ways of working, while you will be responsible for making Engineering work effectively every day.

What we need from you 🔎

We care more about how you operate, lead, and take ownership than about how many years you have held an Engineering Manager title.

You might already be an Engineering Manager, or you might be an experienced engineer or technical leader ready to make Engineering Management the next step in your career.

What matters to us is that you:

  • Take ownership. You identify problems, act on them, follow through, and don't need someone else to continuously push things forward.
  • Create accountability and clarity. You make sure priorities, responsibilities, commitments, and delivery dates are clear and actively followed up.
  • Challenge the team constructively. You ask the right questions, give direct feedback, and raise the bar when expectations are not being met.
  • Think beyond the immediate problem. You naturally ask why something happened, identify root causes, and turn incidents and mistakes into improvements in how we work.
  • Communicate proactively. You keep people aligned and make sure decisions, risks, problems, and learnings don't stay inside individual teams.
  • Understand software engineering deeply enough to lead engineers effectively. You don't need to be the strongest engineer in every technology, but you should be comfortable discussing architecture, quality, delivery, testing, CI/CD, technical debt, and engineering trade-offs.
  • Bring urgency when it matters. Customer-critical issues, incidents, hotfixes, and important releases need active coordination and fast decision-making.
  • Communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing.

Previous people-management experience is valuable, but not a requirement. Strong technical leadership experience, the right mindset, and a clear motivation to grow into Engineering Management can be equally relevant.

What you will own 💻

Your main responsibility is simple: make our Engineering organization execute effectively and continuously get better.

This includes:

  • Engineering execution: Keep visibility over projects, priorities, commitments, blockers, releases, and delivery dates across our Engineering teams.
  • AI adoption: Be the driver of AI adoption across Engineering.
  • Incidents & quality: Drive customer-critical issues, hotfixes, and important incidents with urgency. Make sure we understand root causes and implement improvements that prevent recurring problems.
  • Engineering processes: Continuously improve how Engineering, QA, Product, Support, and IT Operations work together based on real problems and learnings.
  • People & performance: Set clear expectations, give feedback, challenge engineers when necessary, help people grow, and build a culture of ownership and accountability.
  • Communication: Keep Engineering and the wider organization aligned on progress, risks, decisions, and relevant learnings.

AI as an Engineering Multiplier 🤖

We believe AI is fundamentally changing how software teams work, and we want our Engineering organization to actively embrace that change.

Today we are already using tools such as Claude and Codex, but we don't want to prescribe a fixed toolset. We want you to continuously evaluate what works best and drive adoption across the team.

You will be expected to:

  • Experiment with and evaluate AI-assisted engineering workflows and tools.
  • Drive adoption across teams rather than leaving AI usage to individual initiative.
  • Help engineers share workflows, prompts, agents, skills, and learnings that make the whole organization more effective.
  • Explore technologies and approaches such as MCP, agents, coding assistants, and AI-powered development workflows where they can provide real value.
  • Measure what works, discard what doesn't, and continuously raise the team's AI capabilities.

We are not looking for someone who simply follows developments in AI. We want someone excited about making AI a practical productivity multiplier for Engineering.

What success looks like 🚀

Within your first 6–12 months, we would expect to see:

  • Engineering priorities, commitments, and delivery status clearly understood and actively managed.
  • AI becoming part of how our Engineering teams work every day, with useful practices spreading across teams instead of remaining individual experiments.
  • Faster and better-coordinated responses to customer-critical issues and incidents.
  • Recurring bugs and process failures systematically analyzed and reduced.
  • Stronger ownership and accountability across Engineering.
  • Better collaboration between Engineering, QA, Product, Support, and IT Operations.
  • The Head of Product & Engineering able to focus more on strategy and direction because day-to-day Engineering execution is reliably owned by you.

What we offer 🤝

  • 📍 Fully remote within Europe, with flexible working hours.
  • 🎯 Real ownership: You will have significant autonomy over how Engineering operates and improves.
  • 🧠 Room to grow: You don't need to arrive knowing everything about Engineering Management. We want someone capable of growing with the role and the organization.
  • 🤖 AI-first mindset: Freedom to experiment with and introduce tools and workflows that make Engineering better.
  • 🏗️ Meaningful technical challenges: Build and operate secure, mission-critical software used by organizations where reliability and security matter.
  • 🌍 An experienced, international Engineering organization.
  • 🎉 25 days of paid vacation plus your local bank holidays.
  • 💰 Competitive compensation in an international environment.
  • 💻 Company laptop and the tools you need to do your best work.

Employment Type 📝

This position is open to candidates located in Europe only.

Our headquarters are in Munich, Germany, with an additional entity in Spain.

If you are based in Germany or Spain, we offer a permanent employment contract. If you are located elsewhere in Europe, you will work with us as a self-employed contractor while receiving equivalent benefits, including paid vacation, full sick leave coverage, and a company laptop.

Our hiring process 📈

We want our hiring process to be practical, transparent, and focused on understanding how you think, lead, and operate in real situations, not on textbook management answers.

  • 📞 Intro & Ownership Interview — 30–45 min
  • A first conversation to get to know each other. We will introduce Teamwire, our product, Engineering organization, and the context of the role, while learning more about your experience, motivations, and expectations. We will also explore how you approach ownership, leadership, and getting things done.
  • 🛠️ Engineering Management Simulation — 60–90 min
  • A conversation with members of our Engineering team about architecture, quality, delivery, incidents, technical trade-offs, and how you work with engineers. There is no coding exercise.
  • You will work through realistic situations you could encounter at Teamwire: customer issues, releases, delivery challenges, quality problems, team dynamics, and competing priorities. We care about how you analyze, prioritize, communicate, and act.
  • We will also explore how you give feedback, challenge and develop engineers, handle difficult situations, and how you would drive meaningful AI adoption across an Engineering organization.
  • 🤝 Final Conversation — 30–45 min
  • A final conversation with our CEO focused on culture, expectations, company direction, and mutual fit.
  • 📝 Offer

You don't need years of previous Engineering Management experience to succeed in our process. We are interested in your technical foundation, leadership potential, ownership, judgment, and ability to make things happen.

💯 You will always receive complete feedback throughout the hiring process.
