Engineering Manager

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our globally distributed team! The ideal candidate brings strong engineering leadership experience, deep technical expertise in modern web technologies, and a proven ability to balance strategic decision-making with day-to-day execution

What You’ll Do

Lead the Team and Own Staffing

• Directly manage, coach and develop the Engineering team, including the Platform Engineer, with clear expectations and candid feedback.
• Own all Engineering recruiting and hiring, from defining roles and evaluating candidates through selection and onboarding.
• Own performance management, including improvement plans and termination decisions when necessary.
• Manage external software vendors and Engineering contractors, including performance, delivery, cost and contract coordination.

Deliver Software and Work Hands On

• Spend approximately half of the role contributing technically through design, coding, code review, troubleshooting and production support.
• Own Engineering execution from planning through production, including commitments, dependencies, testing and follow-through.
• Own platform architecture with senior engineers, balancing delivery with maintainability, security, scalability and technical debt.
• Partner with the Director of Product on scope and tradeoffs, communicate risks early and represent Engineering in occasional technical conversations with customers and suppliers.

Operate the Platform Securely

• Own uptime, observability, incident response, root-cause follow-up, backup and recovery, release safety and production change controls.
• Ensure cloud infrastructure and integrations are reliable, secure and delivered through infrastructure as code.
• Own the reliability and technical operation of production data pipelines and analytics platforms.
• Own Engineering's SOC 2 technical controls, audit evidence and remediation.

Advance AI-Enabled Engineering

• Advance AI-assisted development and agentic engineering workflows, with clear standards for reviewing, testing, securing, documenting and owning AI-generated software.

What You Bring

• Demonstrated success managing software engineers, including recruiting, coaching, performance management, termination decisions and oversight of external vendors or contractors.
• Recent hands-on experience building and operating production SaaS applications using Node.js, React and relational databases.
• Experience owning SaaS architecture and cloud operations, including infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, incident response and reliability.
• Experience operating production data pipelines and analytics platforms.
• Working knowledge of secure software development and the technical controls required by SOC 2 or a comparable compliance program.
• Practical experience with AI-assisted development and agentic engineering workflows, with sound judgment about review and production readiness.
• Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate with engineers, business leaders, customers and suppliers in a fully remote startup.

Preferred Experience

• Leadership experience in a small or midsize SaaS company with a distributed Engineering team.
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform, PostgreSQL or Typesense.
• Experience with payment or accounting integrations, inventory systems, procurement software or healthcare technology.
• Experience improving a mature monolith while continuing to deliver customer value.
