About Plume:

Plume is a passion-fueled, mission-driven company that is trans-founded with a vision to transform healthcare for every trans life. We hope to make gender-affirming hormone therapy easily accessible at the touch of a button in every state of the US.

This work is deeply personal and heart-driven, and we want teammates who care about the mission and the people we serve. For the right candidates, we present a rare opportunity to do well by doing good. Plume offers an affirming, trans-centered, culturally inclusive, and fun work environment filled with purpose.

About the Role

As an Engineering Manager, you will play a crucial leadership role in guiding, mentoring, and growing a team of Software and Quality Assurance (QA) engineers while supporting the technical architecture and quality of our telehealth platform. You will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure engineering and validation capacity is utilized to most effectively further departmental and organizational priorities. You will establish processes, quality strategies, and operational systems that ensure effective development, rigorous validation throughput, and reliable delivery of generated solutions.

The right person for this role is comfortable spending half your time in a leadership role and half your time providing hands-on individual technical contributions, working alongside your direct reports in feature implementation and bug resolution while stewarding a stable, consistent, and secure platform.

Responsibilities

Leadership, Mentorship & People Development

  • Lead engineering and QA talent: Manage, mentor, and support the career progression of both software engineers and Quality Assurance (QA) engineers through regular 1:1s, continuous feedback, and structured performance evaluations.

  • Cultivate an inclusive culture: Foster a psychologically safe, collaborative, and empowering environment where team members feel celebrated and supported in their authentic identities.

  • Lead hiring initiatives: Serve as the hiring manager for software engineering and QA roles—defining interview stages, selecting interview panels, evaluating candidate feedback, and driving hiring decisions.

  • Quality Assurance, Metrics & Platform Stability Strategy

    • Define quality strategy: Establish a comprehensive, scalable QA strategy combining automated, manual, and regression testing to guarantee a reliable, consistent, and stable production platform.

    • Monitor quality and validation throughput: Track, analyze, and report on core quality metrics (e.g., defect escape rates, test pass/fail trends, mean time to detect/resolve) and QA validation throughput to eliminate release bottlenecks.

    • Continuous QA process optimization: Continuously refine testing pipelines, bug triage workflows, and validation criteria to increase velocity without compromising software safety or reliability.

    • Maintain standards and compliance: Ensure all software releases and testing protocols meet rigorous quality standards, data privacy mandates, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance requirements.

    • Engineering Systems, Processes & Delivery

      • Establish delivery systems: Design, implement, and refine Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) processes and agile systems that ensure predictable, high-velocity delivery of technical solutions.

      • Optimize capacity allocation: Manage and align engineering and QA bandwidth to maximize impact against departmental and organizational priorities.

      • Drive progress visibility: Establish clear tracking mechanisms, project milestones, and delivery dashboards so that development status, QA throughput, and blockers are transparent to all stakeholders.

      • Strategic Collaboration & Modern Engineering Practices

        • Partner cross-functionally: Collaborate closely with Product, Clinical Operations, and Support teams to translate organizational goals into actionable engineering and quality backlogs.

        • Enable organizational readiness: Communicate technical concepts and release readiness clearly to non-technical partners, ensuring smooth rollouts, adequate operational training, and seamless deployments.

        • Navigate emerging tech, best practices & AI evolution: Stay abreast of industry trends, modern test automation frameworks, and evolving engineering methodologies. Proactively navigate the shifting development environment presented by Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities—providing thoughtful guidance that strictly aligns with company AI philosophy while being deeply informed by the perspectives, feedback, and working styles of your individual team members.

        • Hands-On Technical Contribution & Collaborative Architecture

          • Co-develop solutions: Actively write code, implement core features, and resolve complex bugs alongside your direct reports to maintain deep contextual understanding of the codebase.

          • Facilitate collaborative architecture: Facilitate open, rigorous technical design discussions and Request for Comments (RFC) reviews across the team—empowering individual engineers to take ownership of architectural decisions while ensuring generated solutions for our web applications and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are scalable, sound, and maintainable.

          • Elevate code and test quality: Conduct thoughtful code reviews, foster team-wide testing best practices (unit, integration, and end-to-end), and partner with engineers to troubleshoot complex production issues across the stack.

Must Have:

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2+ years in an engineering management, tech lead, or player-coach capacity.

  • Demonstrated experience managing or overseeing Quality Assurance (QA) functions, including test strategy definition, QA workflow design, and automated testing integration.

  • Active, hands-on coding proficiency in our core stack (e.g., Node.js, Python, PostgreSQL, React, and serverless architectures like Amazon Web Services (AWS) Lambda).

  • Proven ability to facilitate technical and architectural discussions, empowering engineers to lead design decisions while maintaining high standards for system reliability and scalability.

  • Thoughtful approach to modern developer tooling and AI, with the ability to evaluate and integrate new tools in harmony with team consensus, engineering ethics, and organizational guidelines.

  • Proven track record of managing quality metrics and validation throughput (e.g., defect density, test automation coverage, release cycle duration) to drive platform reliability.

  • Demonstrated experience balancing direct technical contributions (feature development, debugging, bug fixes) with people management and process ownership.

  • Fluency in modern quality assurance and operational practices, including test automation frameworks, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) test suites, and observability/monitoring tools.

  • Clear, empathetic communication skills with the ability to bridge technical and non-technical domains across clinical and operational stakeholders.

  • Strong empathy for and understanding of the transgender community, including the unique nuances and barriers encountered in gender-affirming healthcare.

Nice-To-Have:

  • Experience in telehealth, digital health, or HealthTech, with working familiarity with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations and Protected Health Information (PHI) safeguarding.

  • Experience implementing or scaling automated end-to-end testing frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Jest).

  • Background in fast-paced startup or scale-up environments, navigating rapid growth and evolving team structures.

  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, such as Terraform.

Applications for this role will be accepted until September 30th, 2026.
