About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and driven Engineering Manager to lead our Data Engineering & BI team within PeopleReady's Data & AI organisation. Reporting directly to the Director, Data & AI, this is a high-impact leadership role responsible for owning and directing the full data-to-decision stack — spanning data platform and ingestion, BI dashboards and business reporting, data governance, and AI agent capabilities.
This is a pivotal moment to join the team: the role takes on data-platform and ingestion ownership newly absorbed through an organisational reorganisation, offering a genuine opportunity to shape how the function operates, build on an evolving technical foundation, and leave a lasting mark on how data flows through the business. You will directly manage a cross-functional team of Data Engineers, BI Engineers, and AI/analytics specialists, and will partner closely with the Engineering Manager, Data Science & ML, to ensure the Feature Store is consistently fed with reliable, well-governed upstream data. If you are passionate about enabling data-driven decisions at scale, mentoring high-performing technical teams, and driving meaningful outcomes through cutting-edge data and AI technologies, this role is for you.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and direct the Data Engineering & BI roadmap across three pillars: data platform and ingestion, BI dashboards and business reporting, and AI agent delivery
- Lead, hire, and coach a cross-functional team of Data Engineers, BI Engineers, and AI/analytics specialists, with full accountability for performance management and career development
- Take ownership of data-platform and ingestion delivery, including pipeline reliability and lakehouse governance on Databricks, Delta Lake, and S3
- Direct ingestion and transformation standards across Airflow, dbt, and AWS Glue/DMS
- Own the BI and reporting practice, including Power BI dashboards, semantic models, and metric-definition standards for business stakeholders
- Direct delivery of AI agent capabilities on AWS Bedrock (LangGraph), including Conversational BI and natural-language interfaces to the lakehouse
- Own data governance across the platform, including access control, PII data masking, and row-level security via Unity Catalog
- Own the semantic layer's metadata quality and direct data-quality monitoring across ingestion and reporting pipelines
- Partner with the Engineering Manager, Data Science & ML, to maintain reliable, well-governed upstream data feeding the Feature Store
- Represent team priorities in roadmap and delivery planning with the Director, Data & AI, and the team's embedded Technical Product Owner/Scrum Master
- Manage team capacity, prioritisation, and delivery planning across all three pillars
- Mentor senior Data Engineers, BI Engineers, and AI Engineers on architecture, standards, and technical decision-making
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience spanning data engineering and/or BI/analytics
- Several years of people-management experience leading a technical team, including hiring, coaching, and performance management across more than one technical discipline
- Proven track record owning both data-platform/engineering delivery and a reporting/BI practice, or demonstrated ability to ramp the less-familiar domain quickly
- Strong working knowledge of Databricks, Delta Lake, S3, Airflow, dbt, and AWS Glue/DMS
- Strong working knowledge of Power BI, semantic and reporting-layer design, and translating ambiguous business requirements into clear, accurate reporting
- Data governance expertise, including access control, PII data masking, and row-level security using Unity Catalog
- Semantic-layer and metadata-quality discipline, ensuring BI reports and AI agents draw from consistent, well-documented, correctly-governed definitions
- Data-quality monitoring practice across ingestion and reporting pipelines
- SQL and dimensional/data-modelling fluency sufficient to review and guide technical work
- Strong cross-functional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to negotiate scope and roadmap directly with senior leadership and peer Engineering Managers
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
- Familiarity with agentic and LLM application patterns, including AWS Bedrock and LangGraph, sufficient to review and guide technical direction for AI agent delivery
- Experience integrating a new functional domain into an existing team following an organisational reorganisation
