Engineering Manager - Edge Infrastructure

The Edge Infrastructure team brings all worldwide user traffic that visits Shopify merchant websites into Shopify's infrastructure. That's 100% of Shopify's commerce traffic, peaking at 489 million requests per minute at the edge during BFCM, with 237 billion requests through egress. As Engineering Manager for Edge Infrastructure, you'll lead a senior team building the routing, traffic management, and protection layers that keep it fast, resilient, and safe, including evolving DDoS and bot defenses for an era when both the attackers and the crawlers are AI-driven. The problems are deeply technical and many-layered, and a lot of the architecture is still to be decided. Key Responsibilities Lead and grow a senior team of engineers responsible for Shopify's edge the layer that carries worldwide storefront traffic into our infrastructure Hold genuinely informed technical opinions about your team's systems and code; you won't be shipping features, but you will be in the architecture Translate high-level direction, sometimes no more than a sentence of it, into a technical vision and then into projects your team can actually execute Own the resilience of the edge, designing for graceful behaviour when internet components fail rather than only when they work Drive traffic and bot management at the edge: evolving DDoS and DoS protections, and distinguishing abusive automation from the good bots that merchants benefit from Weigh cost-to-serve against value when shaping traffic policy serving costs scale with automated traffic, which makes that trade-off part of the technical problem Set direction across routing, DNS, TLS and certificate management, and the protocols underneath them Partner closely with staff-level technical leads and architects working alongside the team on the edge charter Prepare the edge for peak events like BFCM, when the platform's traffic and the stakes are both at their highest Coach senior engineers, including those weighing a move toward leadership themselves, and keep raising the bar on technical depth Collaborate with the infrastructure teams whose systems sit above, below, and beside the edge Hire exceptional software engineers, and build a team they want to stay on Qualifications You've led engineers and stayed close to the technical work, people leadership, and real technical involvement, not one at the expense of the other Hands-on understanding of edge or traffic infrastructure: how a request gets from a browser anywhere in the world into a company's systems Depth in one or more of CDNs at scale, reverse proxies, L4/L7 load balancing, anycast, points of presence, and origin architecture Command of the layers underneath: lower-level network protocols, DNS, TLS and mTLS, certificate management, and PKI Experience with network security and traffic protection WAF, DDoS and DoS mitigation, rate limiting, bot management You've built or owned a platform layer rather than only operating one, and can speak to the design decisions you made and what you'd change Comfortable with systems and state at large-company scale You can clear a technical interview at a senior engineering level; the technical bar for this role is real and non-negotiable You turn ambiguity into direction, and you're energised rather than stalled by a half-sentence of strategy plus a mandate to figure out the rest A software engineering background you've written and shipped production code at some point in your career You grow people, and have helped engineers develop, including into leadership Nice to have Hands-on work with modern proxy architecture such as Envoy or Istio You've written code that runs at the edge Envoy filters, VCL, Lua, or equivalent Open source contributions in the edge, proxy, or networking space Experience measurably reducing cost-to-serve on high-volume traffic A track record mitigating attacks at very high request volumes You've worked on the commerce side of the internet, where the biggest traffic spikes are events on a calendar
