About the job
laiout is a fully automated architectural design tool for floor planning, generating custom layouts in seconds instead of weeks, while delivering data on costs, carbon emissions, and efficiency. Clients already generate over 5 million m² of layouts every month, and growth is accelerating.
We're now looking for an Engineering Manager to own our engineering team: how it works, how it delivers and how it grows.
About Us
We're a team of around 25 people, 10 of them engineers, rethinking how offices are designed. Backed by venture capital investors and global clients, we combine architectural insights with automation. Our CEO and CTO are based in Oslo along with a couple of developers in the region, and the rest of the team is spread across Europe.
Until now our CTO has run both the technology and the team. You'll take over the team, so the CTO can focus on architecture and technical direction.
What You'll Do
The CPO decides what we build and why. You decide how and when. You report to the CTO.
Delivery:
- Running planning, standups and retros.
- Breaking down and estimating work together with the CPO.
- Owning the QA process with our tester, our code review standards and the on-call rota (with DevOps).
- Sharing weekly delivery status with the CEO and CTO.
- Being the default escalation point for anything operational.
People:
- Holding weekly 1:1s with every engineer.
- Running performance reviews, growth plans and improvement plans.
- Onboarding new engineers.
- Owning the hiring pipeline: sourcing, screening and the interview loop up to the final round.
Hands-on (optional):
This is a management role first. If you want to stay close to the code, there's room for it: reviewing PRs, picking up smaller tickets or pairing with engineers. How much you do is up to you and the CTO. It's not a requirement, and it should never crowd out the people and delivery work.
Our Tech Stack
- TypeScript throughout
- Next.js and React (19+) on the frontend
- Rust for the layout engine and performance-critical services
- PostgreSQL
- AWS
You don't need to be an expert in all of this, but you should be comfortable enough to follow technical discussions and judge trade-offs.
Who You Are
You're a manager who is senior enough that engineers come to you, not around you. You make your own calls without needing the CTO to back them up. You're technical enough to judge estimates, review standards and trade-offs, without needing to write the code yourself.
Requirements:
- Experience managing a team of 8+ engineers, ideally in a tech startup
- Technical enough to judge estimates, code review standards and trade-offs
- Proficient in English. It's our only working language, and clear communication across a remote team is central to this role
- ±2 hours of Oslo time
You'll Thrive Here If You…
- Like having a clear mandate from day one rather than carving out your own role.
- Enjoy building team rhythm and process that actually helps engineers ship.
- Care about growing people through regular 1:1s, honest feedback and clear growth plans.
- Are comfortable owning decisions and being the go-to person when things break.
- Like working in a small, senior, remote team.
How We Work
We're a remote team. We value autonomy and proactivity. Regular but flexible online meetings, with Slack holding it together, and regular in-person time in Oslo.
What's in it for You
- A concrete mandate from day one, not a role you have to carve out.
- A small, senior team shipping to real architects and developers every day.
- Fully remote role (±2h Oslo) with regular in-person time in Oslo.
- Competitive salary and equity in a fast-growing global SaaS company.
The Interview Process
Here's what you can expect if you get called in for an interview.
- Intro Call (30 min)
- Round 2
- Round 3 (often not needed)
- Reference check
- We get back to you with a final decision.
