Engineering Manager - Streaming Foundations

About the team The Streaming Foundations team builds and operates streaming infrastructure at Shopify, which includes Shopify’s fleet of Kafka clusters that span the globe, client libraries in Go and Ruby, and services that integrate streaming infrastructure with the rest of Shopify. Our platform powers mission critical event-driven applications across Shopify, such as search, webhooks, and merchant analytics. About the role We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Streaming Foundations team. You’ll be leading a team of world-class engineers to help scale and operate the streaming infrastructure that is part of the core stack that powers Shopify’s products and services. You will pair with the technical leads to drive the roadmap and balance shipping new platform capabilities, without sacrificing platform resiliency in a challenging environment. What you'll do Build, lead and grow a world class team that manages mission critical infrastructure that the rest of Shopify builds on Practice extreme ownership: you own your team's outcomes end to end, from roadmap through production operations Shape the roadmap with teams across Shopify so the platform scales ahead of product needs, not behind them. Stay hands-on by collaborating with the team through shipping code and joining the on-call rotation Use and shape how the team uses AI for design, coding, and collaboration Drive engineering excellence, balancing operational strength with a high shipping cadence. Communicate with diverse audiences (cross-team RFCs, leadership briefs, non-technical stakeholders) What you'll bring (we don’t expect you to have done all of this): Reflexively use AI to accelerate and improve your daily work Have hands-on experience and understanding of Apache Kafka, Kubernetes, GCP, and/or other streaming Have prior experience managing a high-performing team that is responsible for data-intensive mission critical infrastructure Hold a high bar for what great looks like, and push the team to deliver it every time. Demonstrated experience hiring, growing, and shaping a high-performance engineering team Stay technical enough to review designs, challenge trade-offs, and ship code alongside the team At Shopify, we pride ourselves on moving quickly—not just in shipping, but in our hiring process as well.
