About the role
Midwestern is looking for engineers ready to step into a Team Lead role. Team Leads stay hands-on: the majority of your time remains with your client, shipping real work as an embedded engineer. Alongside that, you'll be the day-to-day point of support for a small team of Midwestern engineers, making sure they have the tools, support, and resources they need to support their client.
This is not a full-time management role. Team Leads split their time roughly 90% client work and 10% internal Midwestern responsibilities. You should be someone who can protect focused time for both, and who genuinely cares about helping teammates grow.
What you'll do
- Continue as an embedded engineer on client work, including independent contribution, client-related R&D, PM ceremonies, and developer syncs (about 90% of your time)
- Block and schedule dedicated time each week for internal Team Lead responsibilities (about 10% of your time)
- Speak for your team, making Engineering Managers aware of individual wins and surfacing concerns, suggestions, and solutions
- Support your Engineering Manager's department goals and serve as first point of contact for your team members
- Run weekly 15–30 minute team check-ins covering current work, growth goals, and general well-being
- Hold quarterly 1-on-1s with each teammate (or more often as needed) for deeper pulse checks
- Review and respond to weekly check-ins for your direct reports, escalating issues to your Engineering Manager
- Know your teammates, their projects, and their team dynamics at a high level
- Observe internal project channels to ensure communication and processes are being followed
- Coordinate and evaluate time-off requests
- Support leadership and team members with growth plans and performance improvement plans
- Collect and document team member performance for annual reviews
What we're looking for
- Current Midwestern engineer in good standing on a client engagement
- Strong track record of delivering high-quality work for clients, modeling the QVC standard you'll help your team uphold
- Exemplifies the ideals set in the Midwestern Culture of Impact and can help others grow in them
- Genuine interest in mentoring, supporting, and advocating for teammates
- Strong back
- Organized enough to protect internal time without letting client commitments slip
- Sound judgment on when to handle something directly and when to escalate to an Engineering Manager
- Excellent written and verbal communication, comfortable raising concerns and giving honest feed
- Discretion and trustworthiness with sensitive topics like performance, well-being, and personal concerns
Nice to have
- Mentorship experience: Formal or informal experience onboarding, pairing with, or coaching other engineers
- Prior leadership: Experience as a tech lead, or project lead at Midwestern or a previous company
- Growth & Performance: Familiarity with writing or supporting growth plans, performance reviews, or improvement plans
- Team culture: Experience organizing team events, discussions, or initiatives that brought a team closer together
- Cross-team awareness: Broad understanding of Midwestern's client engagements and how different teams operate
