The Enterprise UX/UI Design Lead is responsible for defining and designing intuitive, consistent, and modern user experiences across Whelen's enterprise applications, including the ERP platform, Customer Portal, and other internal and external business applications.
This role serves as the bridge between business processes, user needs, and technical implementation. The Enterprise UX/UI Design Lead will work closely with business stakeholders, product owners, enterprise architects, developers, and other technical teams to translate business requirements and workflows into clear, usable, and visually consistent application experiences.
The role is responsible not only for creating UI mockups and prototypes, but also for establishing enterprise UX/UI standards, documenting expected application behavior, defining interaction patterns, and developing the visual and functional story that guides application development.
Duties and Responsibilities
UX/UI Design
- Design user interfaces for enterprise applications including ERP, Customer Portal, administrative applications, dashboards, and other digital experiences.
- Create high-fidelity UI mockups that clearly communicate the intended application experience.
- Develop wireframes and low-fidelity concepts to rapidly explore design ideas with business and technical teams.
- Design responsive experiences appropriate for desktop, tablet, and mobile use where applicable.
- Ensure applications provide a consistent and intuitive user experience across modules and platforms.
- Improve existing application interfaces by identifying usability, navigation, workflow, consistency, and accessibility opportunities.
Storyboarding and User Experience Design
- Create storyboards that describe how users interact with applications and how workflows progress from beginning to end.
- Translate complex business processes into understandable user journeys and screen flows.
- Develop user journeys, workflow diagrams, navigation models, and interaction sequences.
- Design the "story" of an application so users can naturally understand what they need to do, where they are in a process, and what happens next.
- Identify opportunities to simplify workflows and reduce unnecessary user interactions.
Business and Technical Collaboration
- Work directly with business stakeholders to understand operational processes, user needs, challenges, and desired outcomes.
- Facilitate design sessions with business users, product owners, architects, developers, and other technical stakeholders.
- Translate business requirements into practical user experiences and application designs.
- Work with development teams to ensure designs can be effectively implemented within the application's technical architecture.
- Participate in design reviews throughout the development lifecycle.
- Review implemented functionality to ensure it aligns with approved designs and intended user experience.
- Incorporate user and stakeholder feedback into iterative design improvements.
Design Standards and Design System
- Establish and maintain enterprise UX/UI standards for Whelen business applications.
- Define approved color palettes, typography, spacing, layout patterns, icons, controls, and other visual standards.
- Define standard application components such as:
- Navigation
- Forms
- Tables and grids
- Search interfaces
- Filters
- Dialogs and overlays
- Notifications
- Validation messages
- Buttons and actions
- Cards
- Tabs
- Wizards and multi-step workflows
- Dashboards
- Develop and maintain a reusable enterprise design system and component library.
- Establish standards for visual hierarchy, required fields, error states, warnings, status indicators, and user feedback.
- Ensure design standards support accessibility, usability, consistency, and maintainability.
- Work with frontend development teams to align design standards with reusable application components.
Functional Design Documentation
- Document the expected functionality and behavior of application screens and components.
- Produce functional UX/UI specifications that development and QA teams can use during implementation and testing.
Document:
- Screen purpose
- User interactions
- Field behavior
- Validation requirements
- Required and optional fields
- Navigation behavior
- Search and filtering behavior
- Error states
- Empty states
- Loading states
- Success and confirmation messages
- Role- or permission-based UI behavior
- Responsive behavior
- Maintain documentation showing how screens, components, and workflows are expected to operate.
- Support Product Owners and Business Analysts in translating UI designs into development stories and acceptance criteria.
- Provide visual documentation that supplements traditional business and technical requirements.
Prototyping
- Build interactive prototypes that allow stakeholders and users to experience proposed functionality before development begins.
- Use prototypes during requirements discussions and usability reviews to validate workflows.
- Demonstrate proposed interactions, navigation, transitions, and application behavior.
- Iterate designs based on feedback before development effort is committed.
User Research and Usability
- Engage with users to understand how they perform their work and interact with existing systems.
- Observe workflows and identify usability challenges within current applications.
- Facilitate usability reviews and design feedback sessions.
- Use feedback, workflow analysis, and application usage patterns to continually improve application design.
- Advocate for the end user while balancing business requirements and technical constraints.
Design Governance
- Participate in architecture and application design reviews where user experience is impacted.
- Review proposed application designs for adherence to enterprise UX/UI standards.
- Help establish governance for new application components and design patterns.
- Identify opportunities to reuse existing patterns rather than creating inconsistent application experiences.
- Maintain documentation describing approved enterprise design standards and patterns.
