The Generation Engineering (GE) Planning & Environmental (P&E) Group is seeking a senior environmental engineer / contaminated land specialist to join the Environmental Engineering Team. The primary responsibility of the role will be managing and delivering services and solutions related to land remediation, pollution control and waste management across the Generation and Trading (GT) project portfolio. The successful candidate will act as a subject matter expert in land remediation and hydrogeology, leading environmental site investigations, risk assessments and remediation programmes, while ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, regulatory requirements and industry best practice.

Through specialist expertise in contaminated land, groundwater protection, environmental risk assessment and remediation, the successful candidate will help deliver resilient low-carbon infrastructure while protecting the environment, managing risk and supporting ESB's commitment to environmental excellence and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage environmental site investigations, assessments and hydrogeological studies for development, operational and demolition/decommissioning projects.

  • Procure and manage external consultants and contractors, review technical reports, and provide expert recommendations to project teams and senior management in relation to Conceptual Site Models (CSMs), Generic Quantitative Risk Assessments (GQRA), Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessments (DQRA) and Remedial Options Appraisals.Manage existing and/or new contract frameworks with relevant industry specialist contractors.

  • Assess groundwater quality data and identify potential impacts to controlled waters, water supplies, ecosystems and sensitive receptors.

  • Provide specialist advice on contaminated land management, land remediation, resource and waste management, and regulatory compliance.

  • Manage environmental incident investigations involving land, groundwater or surface water contamination events.

  • Undertake environmental compliance activities, including construction site environmental compliance and resource and waste management audits, for ESB construction projects.

  • Contribute to the continual improvement of environmental management systems, technical standards and guidance documents.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience within the area of environmental management / environmental compliance / programme management or equivalent

  • Level 8 Environmental Engineering/Science Degree or equivalent qualification

  • Demonstrated experience in contaminated land with exposure to a wide range of environmental and engineering situations including:

  • Knowledge of and successful delivery of projects in accordance with the following: EPA Guidance on Contaminated Land and Groundwater at EPA licenced sites, 2013 & Environment Agency Land Contamination and Risk Management (LCRM) 2020; Guidance on the classification and assessment of waste (1st edition v1.1, WM3) & BS 10175:2011 + A2:2017 Investigation of potentially contaminated sites.

  • Knowledge of and experience in soil and waste management, waste classification, hydrogeological assessment, due diligence, Licensing and Permitting, Generic Quantitative Risk Assessments (GQRA’s), Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessments (DQRA’s) and Remedial Options Appraisals.

  • Working knowledge of Irish and EU environmental legislation and industry best practice standards /guidelines required.

  • Experience with working in multi-disciplinary teams and delivering small to large scale projects.

  • Strong project management skills, including excellent communication, collaboration and report writing skills.

  • Full driving licence and access to a car.

Desirable

  • Project management qualification

  • Level 9 Environmental Engineering/Science Degree or equivalent qualification

  • Chartership within a relevant professional institution / body.

Location

The successful candidates may be based in either:

  • E&MP Offices, The Sidings Building, Dublin 2
  • E&MP Offices, Eastgate, Little Island, Cork

Travel to project locations as required, is a key requirement of the role.

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.

Salary

€59,000 - €70,000 per annum
