Apex Companies is looking for an Staff Scientist to join our environmental team in the Corpus Christi, Texas area. This is a remote, field-based position supporting projects within approximately a 50-mile radius of Corpus Christi.
This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level environmental professional who enjoys working outdoors and wants to build experience in stormwater compliance, environmental fieldwork, SWPPP, BMP inspections, wetlands, GIS, and technical reporting.
The position is approximately 75% field work and 25% remote reporting. You will work independently in the field, with support from Apex's broader Texas environmental team.
Your Responsibilities as a Scientist 1 - Staff Scientist:
- Conduct stormwater inspections along transmission line projects and other environmental sites.
- Hike and drive along transmission line corridors to inspect Best Management Practices (BMPs).
- Verify BMPs are properly installed, functioning as intended, and effectively preventing sediment from leaving project sites.
- Document field observations and maintain accurate field records.
- Prepare technical reports and other project documentation based on field observations and collected data.
- Support SWPPP development and maintenance.
- Assist with wetland delineations, biological/environmental fieldwork, and mapping as opportunities arise.
- Utilize GIS/ArcGIS for mapping and other project support when applicable.
- Follow established field procedures and maintain a strong commitment to health and safety.
- Work independently in the field while communicating effectively with project managers and team members.
- Travel as needed, particularly during initial training and cross-training.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field.
- Previous environmental or field experience is preferred, but direct stormwater experience is not required. We are open to entry-level candidates who have a strong academic or field background and are willing to learn.
- Experience or coursework related to environmental fieldwork, biology fieldwork, wetlands, SWPPP, stormwater, or environmental reporting is a plus.
- Wetland experience is highly desirable.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage field assignments effectively.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions and hiking/driving along transmission lines.
- Strong commitment to safety and safe work practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- GIS/ArcGIS experience is a plus.
- 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is a plus.
- Valid driver's license and good driving history are required.
- Must be located within approximately 50 miles of Corpus Christi, TX.
