ESD / Safety Engineer Apply Now ReOrbit is looking for a motivated and experienced ESD / Safety Engineer to join our growing team at our headquarters in Helsinki, Finland. As our new ESD / Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining ESD control and safety practices across spacecraft Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) activities. You will play a key role in ensuring that flight hardware, personnel, facilities and test activities comply with applicable ESD, safety, cleanroom and environmental requirements. You will work closely with AIT, Product Assurance and engineering teams to define safe and controlled integration and test environments, support hazard identification and risk mitigation, and ensure that ESD and safety requirements are consistently implemented throughout AIT operations. Responsibilities Define and maintain the ESD Control Plan for spacecraft AIT operations. Ensure compliance with applicable ESD standards, including ECSS-Q-ST-20-07 or equivalent standards. Classify hardware according to ESD sensitivity levels and define appropriate handling requirements. Specify ESD Protected Areas (EPAs), grounding concepts and ESD-safe tools and equipment. Verify the correct use of wrist straps, grounding systems and ESD-safe workstations. Conduct regular ESD audits and inspections across cleanrooms and AIT areas. Investigate, document and report ESD-related incidents and non-conformances. Define and implement safety procedures for spacecraft integration, testing and handling activities. Perform hazard analyses and risk assessments for AIT operations. Ensure the safe handling of flight hardware, test equipment and hazardous systems. Participate in safety reviews, test readiness reviews and other AIT review activities. Define and maintain lock-out/tag-out and access control procedures where required. Ensure compliance with cleanroom procedures and environmental requirements. Coordinate contamination control activities in collaboration with AIT and engineering teams. Monitor and maintain appropriate humidity, temperature and particle-level requirements. Develop and deliver ESD and safety training programs for AIT and engineering personnel. Certify and maintain personnel qualifications for critical operations where required. Promote a strong safety and compliance culture across AIT teams. Work closely with AIT, Product Assurance and engineering teams to ensure ESD and safety requirements are incorporated into AIT processes and configurations. Coordinate with engineering teams to ensure design-for-ESD and safety considerations are addressed throughout the spacecraft lifecycle. Support the definition and review of safe test configurations and operational procedures. Perform ESD verification checks and safety inspections during AIT activities. Maintain compliance records, inspection reports and safety logs. Support internal and external audits and ensure timely closure of identified findings. Investigate ESD, safety and environmental incidents. Support the management of non-conformance reports (NCRs) and corrective actions. Perform root cause analysis and define appropriate mitigation and preventive actions. Track corrective actions through to closure and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Skills and Requirements Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent qualification. Professional experience in ESD control, safety engineering or a related field, preferably within a high-reliability engineering environment. Knowledge of ESD control principles, grounding concepts and ESD-safe working practices. Knowledge of applicable ECSS standards and requirements. Understanding of cleanroom operations, contamination control and environmental monitoring. Experience with risk assessment, hazard identification and safety procedures. Strong attention to detail and a structured approach to compliance and documentation. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering and AIT teams. Experience working on satellite AIT campaigns or spacecraft integration and test activities. Certification or formal training in ESD control and/or occupational safety. Experience working in cleanroom environments and with flight hardware. Familiarity with digital AIT environments, configuration management and electronic documentation systems. Experience with non-conformance management, root cause analysis and corrective actions. Knowledge of additional space industry standards and best practices related to AIT safety and product assurance. What does ReOrbit do?
