ARCA Consulting is supporting a specialist engineering business in the appointment of an Estimator to join its Operations & Commercial team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in estimating, quantity surveying or commercial support who is looking to develop their career within the energy, utilities and infrastructure sectors, with the opportunity to progress towards a Senior Estimator role.

The Role

You’ll work closely with design, planning, procurement and delivery teams, supporting:

  • Reviewing tender documents to identify scope, risks and commercial requirements.
  • Preparing estimates and tenders for overhead line, substation, cable and civil engineering works.
  • Taking off quantities from drawings and building up rates for labour, plant, materials and subcontractors.
  • Obtaining and comparing supplier and subcontractor quotations.
  • Working with design and operations teams to confirm methods, programmes, access, outages and resourcing.
  • Preparing tender programmes, preliminaries, risk registers and pricing documentation.
  • Supporting variations, compensation events and commercial change control.
  • Maintaining estimating databases and cost benchmarks to improve future pricing.
  • Supporting tender clarifications and client presentations, while ensuring compliance with relevant health, safety, environmental and CDM requirements.

About You

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Two to five years’ experience in estimating, quantity surveying or a similar commercial role within construction, civil engineering, energy or utilities.
  • The ability to interpret civil, structural and electrical drawings and carry out quantity take-offs.
  • A good understanding of cost build-ups, resource pricing and supply chain costs.
  • Strong Excel skills and familiarity with estimating or commercial software.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation and communication skills, with the ability to meet tender deadlines.
  • A relevant degree, HNC/HND or equivalent practical experience.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel occasionally for site visits.

Experience in overhead line, substation, cable or civils projects would be advantageous, alongside knowledge of NEC4 contracts, framework tendering, TO/DNO standards, temporary works or live operational environments. Progress towards RICS, ICE, CIOB or similar professional membership, and familiarity with Microsoft Project, would also be beneficial.

Why Apply?

  • Exposure to a varied portfolio of energy and utilities infrastructure projects.
  • Opportunity to develop your estimating and commercial expertise within a growing specialist engineering business.
  • Close collaboration with experienced technical, operational and commercial teams.
  • Clear opportunity to progress towards a Senior Estimator role.

Development & Training

You’ll receive the opportunity to build on your existing experience through practical involvement in tender preparation, cost planning, procurement, risk assessment and commercial change control. Working alongside experienced colleagues, you’ll develop the technical and commercial skills needed to progress towards a Senior Estimator position.
