Description This position requires extensive travel throughout the assigned territory. Candidates located in the Southwest region are strongly preferred. Position Summary The Inspector is responsible for conducting routine and complaint-driven inspections of breeders, kennels, and pet stores to ensure compliance with American Kennel Club (AKC) rules, regulations, and departmental procedures. This role requires independent judgment, strong investigative skills, detailed documentation, and extensive knowledge of AKC programs, rules, and purebred dogs. The Inspector is responsible for preparing comprehensive inspection reports, collecting DNA samples, and providing testimony during Trial Board Hearings when necessary. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Conduct routine inspections of breeders, kennels, and pet stores identified on the annual Inspection Candidate List to verify compliance with AKC rules and regulations. Perform complaint-driven inspections as assigned by management. Prepare accurate, detailed, and timely written reports documenting inspection findings and recommendations. Collect DNA samples in accordance with established procedures and submit samples to AKC offices for processing. Provide testimony at Trial Board Hearings as required. Communicate and handle complex, sensitive, and confidential information with professionalism and discretion. Interpret and apply AKC policies, procedures, and regulations during inspections and investigations. Exercise independent judgment while working autonomously under broad organizational guidelines and established policies. Maintain and safeguard confidential information, equipment, and other organizational assets. Manage inspection schedules, documentation, and follow-up activities within assigned territories. Qualifications 4–7 years of experience utilizing inspection, investigative, compliance, or research skills. Previous involvement with purebred dogs is required. In-depth knowledge of AKC rules, regulations, programs, and/or a strong background in the sport of purebred dogs. Thorough understanding of AKC inspection processes and DNA sampling procedures. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel, as well as email and internet-based research tools. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and professional written reports. Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills. High level of maturity, emotional stability, sound judgment, and professionalism. Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Investigative and analytical skills. Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation. Ability to assess compliance and identify potential violations of AKC rules and regulations. Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations tactfully. Effective relationship-building and communication skills when interacting with breeders, kennel owners, and other stakeholders. Ability to travel frequently and work independently in the field. Work Environment Primarily field-based position involving travel to breeder, kennel, and pet store locations. Requires independent work with minimal supervision while adhering to established policies and procedures. May require attendance at hearings and occasional overnight travel based on inspection assignments. This position plays a critical role in supporting AKC's mission by promoting compliance, maintaining the integrity of the registry, and protecting the welfare and responsible breeding of purebred dogs. The salary range for this position is $54,000 - $60,000/year; however, salary offered may vary depending on skill, experience, job-related knowledge and location.
