Description
The Kentucky Department of Education is a service agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and part of the
Education and Labor Cabinet. The department provides resources and guidance to Kentucky’s public schools and
districts as they implement the state’s P-12 education requirements. The department also serves as the state
liaison for federal education requirements and funding opportunities.
The department is led by an appointed commissioner of education, who is hired by and answers to the 11-member Kentucky Board of Education. Offices are administered by associate commissioners, and divisions within those offices are administered by division directors.
The department employs approximately 425 Frankfort-based workers; 175 employees in support of the Kentucky School for the Blind (Jefferson County) and Kentucky School for the Deaf (Boyle County); and about 518 employees at the 50 Area Technology Centers across the state.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Perform general administrative office duties such as ordering supplies, maintaining records management systems, performing basic recordkeeping. Answer phones and provide information to callers. Keep manuals current. Draft and type correspondence, memos, reports and documents. Proofread correspondence and reports for accuracy.
- Open, sort, and distribute incoming correspondence, including faxes and email. Prepare Department Purchase Requisitions (DPR), travel requests, and pro-card payments for Associate Commissioner and other KDE staff.
- Schedule appointments, reservations and travel arrangements for the Associate Commissioner or office staff. Manage and maintain supervisor's schedule. Greets internal and external customers and committee members on behalf of KDE. Schedule and prepare conference rooms for meetings. Perform special projects upon request.
- Interpret regulations according to well defined standards and apply rules to a variety of work situations. Review operating practices and procedures in order to determine whether improvements can be made in areas such as workflow, reporting procedures, or expenditures for administrative workflow.
