Position Summary

The Intern in the Finance and HCM Solutions department will learn about ERP Solution platforms that are configuration and cloud based and will work in a team environment developing new applications and maintaining existing applications that are part of Finance and Human Capital Management business processes. They may be responsible for supporting related third-party software and other toolkits, as well as working with end-users to define the project requirements for analysis and design of solutions. As a part of a project team, the Intern will perform a full range of activities including Systems Analysis and Design; Application Programming Development; Unit, Systems and Acceptance testing; and Systems implementation and maintenance. This position will be assigned to the Finance and HCM Solutions developer team under the ERP Solutions unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a full-time bachelor’s or master’s degree program in computer science, business or computer information systems, or a closely related major with at least one semester remaining to complete all degree requirements following the internship.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in basic coding, troubleshooting and debugging
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 products such as Word, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook, Visio, OneNote and beginner relational databases
  • Possess strong attention to detail and good communication skills
  • Team oriented with collaboration goals in mind
  • Self-motivated and interested in independent research work
  • Fundamental knowledge of the system development lifecycle, document management, specification writing and test plans
  • Experience with SQL
  • Familiarity with relational database programming techniques
  • Completion of at least one basic accounting course
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Work Modality

Currently we have a hybrid work schedule which may be subject to change in the future.

Job Duties

The Finance & HCM Intern will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Learn the toolsets related to Workday and related ERP project tools and apply knowledge to selected project assignments to build programming knowledge in these areas.
  • Participate as a team member on Workday and other ERP solution projects selected
  • Assist in the analysis of user requirements
  • Apply programming and business analysis skills to provide technical support for application modules assigned. This will include configuration, possible coding, testing installation and documentation of the system’s functions.
  • Participate in discussions of the definition, design and construction of processes/structures to support project requirements
  • Ensure that system development and support projects adhere to application development standards and procedures, standard configurations and policies dictated by the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System
  • Provide support, troubleshooting and maintenance of assigned systems to ensure that New York State Teachers’ Retirement System staff can utilize applications in an efficient and timely manner
  • Collaborate on information in a team environment to communicate goals, objectives and knowledge
  • Code, test and implement applications in a team environment

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review multiple sets of user requirements and transfer information into functional and technical specifications
  • Assist other team members by transcribing meeting notes
  • Assist with the updates of existing test plan edits and creation of new test plans
  • Create and update use cases for ongoing and historical projects
  • Create and update queries and / or small programs
