Learn more at www.buildrenew.com Position Overview: The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls for a growing solar energy company. This role partners closely with executive leadership, project management/accounting, operations, and business development teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, project profitability analysis, cash flow management, and compliance with industry-specific accounting requirements. This role owns the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process, establishes and maintains standardized accounting procedures, and ensures the company's financial records are GAAP compliant and continuously audit ready. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting expertise with hands-on experience managing financial aspects of construction, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects. This position plays a critical role in supporting the company's growth through effective financial management of utility-scale, commercial, and distributed solar projects. Essential Functions: Financial Management & Reporting • Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, fixed assets, and cash management. • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. • Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. • Develop, document, implement, and maintain comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all accounting and finance processes. • Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting requirements. • Prepare financial reports and analysis for executive leadership and investors . • Support project financing activities, including lender reporting and compliance requirements. Monitor accounting standards and implement changes necessary to maintain GAAP compliance. • Ensure all accounting policies remain current, documented, and consistently applied throughout the organization. Financial Close • Own and lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close cycles from planning through completion. • Establish close calendars, assign responsibilities, monitor progress, and ensure deadlines are consistently met. • Ensure all journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and financial analyses are completed accurately and on schedule. • Continuously improve the close process by identifying opportunities to increase efficiency, automation, and accuracy. • Deliver complete and accurate financial statements and management reporting packages within established timelines. Project Accounting & Cost Management • Coordinate with project accounting on the following items: o Tracking of project budgets, costs, commitments, change orders, and project profitability. o Monitoring work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and revenue recognition. o Collaborating with project managers to review project financial performance and forecasts. o Analyzing project variances and identify opportunities to improve margins and operational efficiency. o Managing capitalization of development and construction costs in accordance with accounting standards. Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow • Participate in annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes. • Develop and maintain project-level and corporate cash flow forecasts. • Monitor liquidity requirements and financing needs across active projects. • Support strategic planning through financial modeling and scenario analysis. • Provide recommendations to improve financial performance and working capital management. Compliance & Risk Management • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, lending agreements, and investor reporting requirements. • Maintain effective internal controls and risk management processes. • Support compliance with renewable energy incentive programs, grants, tax credits, and other industry-specific requirements. • Oversee sales and use tax, property tax, and other jurisdictional compliance matters. Leadership & Team Development • Manage and mentor accounting and finance team members. • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. • Partner cross-functionally with operations, project management, procurement, and executive leadership teams. • Assist with ERP implementation, process automation, and system enhancements. Qualifications: Required • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. • CPA designation is highly preferred. • 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience. • 3+ years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership role. • Experience in renewable energy, solar, construction, EPC, infrastructure, or project-based industries. • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls. • Experience with project accounting, job costing, and revenue recognition. • Advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting/ERP systems. Preferred • Experience with solar development, EPC contracting, or renewable energy asset management. • Familiarity with tax equity financing, project financing structures, and renewable energy tax credits. • Experience implementing or managing ERP systems such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Viewpoint, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar platforms. • Knowledge of percentage-of-completion and construction accounting methodologies.
