The Position
We are looking for individuals with passion and commitment to their job responsibilities and take advantage of AHA’s Training and Mentoring programs.
Working under the direction of the Project Manager and Department Director, AHA is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer for our Burlington, MA office to join our team.
The Fire Protection Engineer performs application of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Participates in complex assignments, overseeing design process, and acts as technical expert on specialized Projects. The Fire Protection Engineer will have frequent contact with clients, contractors, local fire department officials, and equipment suppliers/representatives. Performs advanced, non-routine application of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Oversee design process or act as technical expert on a specialized design. Assists Project Manager and/or Department Director with review, analysis and improvement of systems and design. Helps in the professional development of Drafters and Designers through technical instruction and explanation of complex engineering design concepts. Mentor, direct, and review the work of junior engineers and designers, and support their professional development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following skills and duties are necessary to perform the job successfully but are not all inclusive
- Coordinate and complete design layouts for fire alarm and fire protection systems, system specifications, and equipment selection.
- Prepare engineering studies, scope of work narratives, and due diligence reports for fire alarm and fire protection systems and analyze operation of existing systems.
- Produce sketches and system schematics for complicated design tasks such as layout of fire pump rooms, fire command center rooms in high-rise buildings, and clean agent gaseous fire suppression system design.
- In-depth knowledge of NFPA 13, 14, 20, 24, 25, 72, 2001, and FM Global data sheets, as well as IBC and IFC requirements and the ability to apply these codes or identify alternatives and solutions to building code exceptions.
- Familiarity with NFPA 75 and 76 and data center fire protection best practices.
- Experience designing fire alarm and fire protection systems for data center, life science, mission critical, commercial, or institutional projects.
- Perform sprinkler system and/or standpipe system hydraulic calculations using HydraCalc software. AutoSPRINK or Elite HASS knowledge is equivalent.
- Review Contractor’s shop drawings for Contract and Code compliance.
- Perform site surveys for documenting existing conditions of fire alarm and fire protection systems equipment in existing buildings. Perform construction site inspections for punch list items.
- Inform Project Managers and/or Department Director of changes to project design and/or scope that may impact project fee structure, project budget, and schedule.
- Actively promote and instruct others in the use of Company design production standards & master specifications.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Handle multiple complex, non-routine projects with efficiency and accuracy.
- Participate and contribute to a team effort, exchanging ideas and recommending improvements.
- Distribute and delegate workload efficiently and accurately throughout the fire protection design team to meet demanding and overlapping project schedules.
- Attend client, construction, and fire official meetings as required.
- Assist Project Manager and/or Department Director in resolving client issues and promote company capabilities.
- Demonstrate superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Provide assistance, as needed or directed, to deliver a quality product on schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from an ABET accredited school in engineering, architecture, or related discipline. Master’s degree (M.S.) in fire protection engineering is preferred, but not required.
- Completion of Fundamentals of Engineering exam is required, PE License preferred.
- Minimum 7 years experience in fire protection and/or fire alarm engineering environment or equivalent field of operation.
- Possess high level of analytical ability used to solve complex problems.
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems concepts and design for coordination purposes.
- Thorough understanding of applicable codes, ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics and engineering drawings.
- Skillful use and understanding of Autodesk Revit/AutoCAD design software. Computer skills shall also include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Must have valid driver’s license in good standing.
Expected Salary Range
The expected compensation for this role, including benefits, ranges from $90,000 to $130,000 annually and will be determined based on experience, licensure, education, internal equity, project scope, and location.
