The Role
We're hiring our first in-house lawyer — a founding legal seat. This is not a compliance or governance role; it's a deal acceleration role. You'll own the commercial side end to end, and as our first lawyer you'll also carry the wider legal work as it lands: corporate, employment, privacy, IP, real estate, entity and international matters.
What You'll Do
Own all commercial contract negotiation and execution — MSAs, DPAs, Order Forms, amendments, renewals
Review and turn customer redlines in hours, not days
Build and maintain a contract playbook — pre-approved fallback positions, self-serve templates, approved language library
Work directly with the sales team — know which deals are strategic and which redlines matter
Own Japan APPI compliance and addenda for our growing JP enterprise business
Take on the wider in-house workstream as it lands — corporate/financing, employment, privacy and cyber incidents, IP, real estate, entity/tax — and judge what to handle in-house vs. send out
Manage outside counsel and drive down external counsel spend
Partner with Customer Success on renewal and expansion contract terms
Build scalable legal processes so SMB/MM self-serves where possible, while Enterprise gets faster, cleaner turns
What We're Looking For
A senior commercial/transactional lawyer (roughly 8–14 years), ideally at a high-growth enterprise SaaS, with series rounds and/or IPO exposure
Deep experience with enterprise MSAs, DPAs, data privacy frameworks (GDPR, CCPA, APPI) and security addenda
Has built a contract playbook before — you turn bespoke legal work into repeatable, scalable processes
Breadth beyond commercial: hands-on with at least 2 of corporate/financing, employment, privacy/cyber incidents, IP, real estate, or tax/entity work — and good judgment on what to keep vs. send to outside counsel
Japan/APPI: has owned APPI-compliant terms or cross-border data deals with Japanese counterparties (not just awareness)
Comfortable working embedded in a sales team, not in a legal silo
Experience managing outside counsel — know when to escalate vs. handle in-house
SOC 2, ISO 27001 environment experience preferred
International experience (EMEA/GDPR, APAC) a plus
Bar admission in at least one US state preferred
