Freelance AI Engineer

At adesso Belgium, we are looking for an AI engineer to join our team of experts in artificial intelligence.

As an AI Engineer within our team, you will play a key role in the design, development, and implementation of innovative projects utilizing technologies such as GPT, Azure AI services, and other advanced AI techniques. You will work closely with our interdisciplinary teams to create solutions that address the specific needs of our clients and push the boundaries of what is achievable with AI.

Your Role?

• Develop end-to-end AI use-cases:

  • Quickly prototype scenarios from AI to UX for end users.

  • Engineer prompts effectively to optimize AI performance.

  • Contribute to the design, development, and implementation of solutions based on Azure OpenAI & other Azure services.

  • Use your knowledge and creativity to design smart solutions that leverage data and AI tools to fulfill the feature requirements.

  • Integrate Azure AI services with existing systems.

• Documentation:

  • Provide clear and precise documentation of code, processes, and workflows.

• Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the existing team to comprehend project requirements and AI architecture goals.

  • Collaborate closely with other team members to ensure seamless solution integration into the existing environment.

  • Participate in code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions with other team members.

  • Follow best practices in development, security, and performance.

• Technological watch:

  • Stay updated with AI and machine learning trends, experimenting with new techniques and incorporating relevant advancements into our projects.

  • Maintain continuous technological awareness and engage in training to keep your skills up-to-date.

• Use case definition in “Co-creation mode”:

  • Collaborate with design and product teams to understand customer needs and translate them into technical software and AI solutions.

  • Co-create suitable use cases with the business that can benefit from generative AI.

  • Ensure the appropriate level of AI complexity is selected for use-cases.

• Evangelism

  • Educate technical and business leaders on the usage of generative AI.

Profile, Experience & Skills :

• University degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.

• Practical experience in designing, developing, and implementing artificial intelligence projects in company, with a focus on OpenAI or large language models.

• In-depth knowledge of pre-trained language models such as GPT and their practical applications.

• Expertise in Agentic Approach (openAI Agent SDK, MCP Tools, …)

• Experience with Azure AI services and their integration into comprehensive solutions.

• Proficiency in programming with Python.

• Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

• Strong problem-solving, communication, and presentation skills.

• Proactive approach to finding solutions and taking initiative.

• Strong adherence to software development standards using DevOps practices.

• Expertise in prompt engineering.

• Experience with API Development: Experience in developing and integrating RESTful APIs to enable seamless interaction between AI models and other software systems.

• Experience with cloud architecture, Azure Functions, SQL databases is very appreciated.

• Experience with Business Intelligence process, development of ETL/ELT process.

Required Experience

Hard skills:

• 3‑7 years of experience in data engineering or related roles.

• Proficient in Python and SQL.

• Solid hands-on experience with big data frameworks (e.g. Spark), ETL/ELT pipelines, and orchestration tools.

• Good knowledge of cloud architecture, data lakes/warehouses, and scalable data infrastructure.

• Familiarity with DevOps/DataOps practices (CI/CD, IAC, monitoring).

Soft skills:

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Effective communicator – technical and non-technical.

• Comfortable working in agile, cross-functional teams.

• Self-starter with a growth mindset and flexibility.

Other requirements:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

• Fluent in English; knowledge of Dutch or French is a plus.

• Willingness to work 2 days per week onsite in Brussels (hybrid model).
