Job Title: Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer Job Description The Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer supports engineering, design, and modernization initiatives for nuclear power generation facilities. This role focuses on process instrumentation that measures key variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, and level, and on the control systems that use these signals for plant indication, alarms, and control. The engineer develops and reviews engineering design packages, evaluates vendor solutions, prepares and reviews electrical and instrumentation drawings, and supports field implementation activities. The position plays a critical role in technical evaluations, digital upgrade projects, and ensuring compliance with NRC requirements and nuclear industry standards, while verifying that new system designs meet operational and regulatory expectations. The engineer collaborates closely with clients, project teams, vendors, and fellow engineers to execute plant modifications and modernization projects and provides technical leadership, including mentoring junior engineers and reviewing their work. Responsibilities Develop, review, and validate engineering design packages for instrumentation and control systems in nuclear power plants. Design and support modifications and modernization projects for I&C systems, including digital upgrade initiatives and analog-to-digital replacements. Evaluate vendor solutions and equipment for suitability, compliance, and performance within nuclear plant applications. Prepare and review electrical and instrumentation drawings, control system schematics, and related documentation. Perform technical evaluations, engineering calculations, and design change assessments for plant control systems. Ensure that instrumentation and control system designs comply with NRC requirements, nuclear standards, and plant-specific regulatory expectations. Verify that new and modified systems meet operational performance, safety, and reliability criteria. Support field implementation activities, including testing, validation, and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems. Provide technical oversight for system design, vendor review, field testing, and digital modernization efforts. Collaborate with project management, design teams, field services, vendors, and client stakeholders to execute plant modifications and upgrades. Support plant control system architecture development, including PLC-based and distributed control systems (DCS) platforms. Review and mentor junior engineering staff, providing technical guidance and feedback on design work and documentation. Participate in major nuclear plant modification projects, contributing to control system strategy and implementation. Apply nuclear regulatory requirements and standards to I&C designs and project deliverables. Consider cybersecurity aspects in the design and implementation of digital control systems. Essential Skills Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution. At least 10 years of experience in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineering, including experience in nuclear power plants. Significant experience supporting instrumentation and control system design, modification, or modernization projects within commercial nuclear power plants. Experience supporting digital modernization projects and analog-to-digital upgrade initiatives in nuclear facilities. Strong understanding of process instrumentation used to measure and monitor temperature, pressure, flow, tank levels, and similar variables. Deep knowledge of control system architecture, including PLC-based systems and Distributed Control Systems (DCS). Familiarity with DCS platforms such as Ovation and their application in plant control. Strong understanding of nuclear regulatory requirements and NRC regulations as they apply to I&C systems. Ability to prepare, review, and validate engineering design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and technical reports. Experience with system design, engineering calculations, design changes, vendor review, technical oversight, and field testing/validation for control systems. Ability to work closely with clients, project teams, vendors, and fellow engineers to deliver complex plant modifications and modernization projects. Capability to provide technical leadership within project teams, particularly on nuclear I&C modernization efforts. Additional Skills & Qualifications Strong preference for prior experience holding a "Responsible Engineer" title at a nuclear plant. Professional Engineer (PE) license or active progress toward obtaining PE licensure. Experience with major nuclear plant modification projects and large-scale I&C upgrades. Prior experience providing technical mentorship, design reviews, and oversight for junior engineering staff. Familiarity with cybersecurity considerations and best practices for digital control systems in nuclear environments. Experience with digital upgrade projects, including replacement of analog systems with modern digital platforms. Knowledge of Ovation and other advanced plant control technologies used in nuclear power generation. Ability to translate complex instrumentation and control concepts into clear requirements and design documentation. Strong communication skills for effective interaction with clients, cross-functional teams, and vendors. Interest in contributing to critical modernization and digital transformation initiatives within the nuclear power industry. Work Environment This role operates primarily in an engineering office environment, with occasional visits to nuclear power plant sites for design reviews, field testing, and implementation support. The position involves close collaboration with project management, design engineering, field services, vendors, and client stakeholders in a cross-functional, team-oriented setting. Daily work includes a mix of detailed design activities, technical review, client interface, and support for implementation and validation of instrumentation and control systems. The environment emphasizes technical excellence, safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous modernization of plant control technologies, including exposure to cutting-edge digital control platforms that support the future of nuclear generation.
