About the role

At Todoist, our mission is to empower people with simple yet powerful tools.

We're a multidisciplinary, fully-remote, team that's passionate about creating products, like Todoist and Comms, that improve people's lives. We thrive on innovating new solutions to old productivity challenges and we seek to rethink how productivity tools are made.

Our Core Values

They are few, but they are mighty. From creating processes to decision-making and recruiting, we build our four core values into nearly every single thing we do.

  • Ambition. You aspire to put a dent in the universe. You set high standards for yourself and those around you. You solve issues that have a high impact on our customers and our company.

  • Mastery. You care deeply about the quality of your work. You're continuously learning and pushing yourself to the limits of your ability. As a champion of your craft, you are also a champion of your well-being – you work intensely, then disconnect completely.

  • Independence. Others can trust that you'll deliver on time. You keep your word and trust your teammates to do the same. You are proactive, take ownership, and remain accountable with little or no direction.

  • Communication. Your communication is clear, concise, and engaging. You keep others in the loop and never go radio silent. You speak respectfully and foster warm relationships through your interactions. You're culturally and socially aware and can appropriately navigate social situations.

Your Team & Role

Todoist is a fully-remote company of about 100 people across more than 30 countries. We've been profitable and self-funded since 2007, and we've grown Todoist and Comms without outside investors. That shapes how we work: small teams, long time horizons, and a preference for clarity over process.

This is our first in-house legal role. Today we work with outside counsel case by case, which serves us well for specialist matters but leaves the everyday questions — a customer contract, a privacy question, an employment question in a country we haven't hired in before — waiting longer than they should. You'll take full DRI ownership of legal at Todoist: bringing that work in-house, and shaping how we handle it from here.

You'll report to our Head of Finance and collaborate with every function: Product and Engineering on privacy and data protection, People on employment questions across our distributed team, and Marketing on brand, content, and trademark. The work spans commercial contracts, employment, privacy and GDPR, IP, litigation, and questions that cross jurisdictions — and you'll keep working with specialist external counsel where their depth earns its cost.

A typical week might include reviewing and negotiating customer and vendor agreements, answering questions in Comms threads from teammates who need a clear yes, no, or "here's the tradeoff", updating a policy that no longer reflects how we work, and choosing which specialist matters to route to external counsel.

We're open on level here: the role can be a good fit at two points on our career framework, and where you land depends on the scope you're ready to own from the start. We'll be direct about that as we talk.

Because we're remote and asynchronous, much of your work will be written, and AI is part of how we all work day to day. You'll be trusted to set your own priorities, and you'll have room to build the templates, systems, and documentation the company needs — starting with what we need now, rather than what a larger company would need.

About You

  • Substantial legal experience, ideally including general counsel work at a global company, and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state (any state works). You can live anywhere in the world, like the rest of our team across 30+ countries, but our company is legally registered in the U.S., so a U.S. license is what lets you advise on the risks

  • Proven expertise in at least two legal domains, ideally commercial alongside privacy or litigation, and eager to widen that range with us

  • Comfortable across a broad set of matters: commercial contracts, privacy and data protection, employment, IP, and litigation. You won't be a specialist in all of them, and you understand when to bring in someone who is

  • Working knowledge of data protection regimes such as GDPR, and how they apply to a consumer software product

  • Experience supporting a tech or SaaS company; remote experience is a plus

  • You write clearly for non-lawyers. Our company runs on written communication, and your advice will be read by teammates without legal training

  • You're comfortable as the only lawyer in the room, ready to own complex matters end to end, and you enjoy building something from the ground up

  • You give practical guidance — you help teams understand the tradeoffs and move forward, rather than handing over a list of risks

  • Comfortable collaborating across time zones and cultures in a mostly asynchronous environment

  • Excited to use AI in your work on a regular basis

Apply soonest, as these roles don't come along often and we move fast.
