Hi, we’re Penfold - we’re on a mission to help everyone save enough to be comfortable in later life! 🚀
There’s over a trillion pounds sitting in UK pensions – but most of it is with legacy providers offering outdated products and poor service. We’re here to change that.
Penfold is building the pension of the future – a modern, tech-first platform that makes saving for later life easy, engaging and accessible for everyone.
We’re a growing team of 70+ builders across London and Tallinn, backed by some of the world’s leading FinTech investors. Having raised £25M+, we manage £1bn+ in pensions for over 100,000 savers and thousands of businesses — and we’re on track for profitability next year.
As one of our first 90 hires, you’ll play a key role in shaping our culture and have loads of opportunity to grow, progress and make your mark.
About the role
We are building a small, dedicated growth team, and this is a new role within it. The team is responsible for growing the value of the pensions our members hold with us, and increasing membership through the Refer-a-Friend programme.
The role covers several areas across a member’s pension journey, from the point they join us through to long after they leave an employer.
You would report to the Head of Growth, who is accountable for the growth numbers themselves. Your job would be to make sure the team is aiming at the right things, that the numbers it relies on can be trusted, and that decisions get made on evidence.
Your responsibilities
Analysis and direction
- Use cohort and funnel data to work out how to maximise post-acquisition customer value
- Turn that analysis into specific recommendations for colleagues about who to contact, and why
- Use AI tools and automation where they help you reach an answer faster, particularly for exploratory analysis
- Maintain the framework the team uses to measure growth, and work out what the underlying dashboards need to show
Forecasting and sizing
- Build and maintain the forecast for the growth function
- Size new growth ideas before they are pursued, so effort goes toward the highest impact ones
- Write the business case for larger initiatives
Experiment design
- Design experiments properly with clear hypotheses, agreed ways of judging success, and appropriate holdout groups
- Interpret results and ensure they reflect genuine effects
- Write up what was learned after each significant test, along with a view on what should happen next
Coordination and reporting
- Support the Head of Growth in coordinating the planning and follow-up for the team’s initiatives each quarter, most of which are cross-functional
- Growth PMO support – keeping track of who owns what and by when, and flagging early if something is falling behind schedule
- Support the Head of Growth in producing the regular reporting the wider business sees on how growth is progressing
Skills and Experience:
Must-haves
- 2-4 years in a role such as revenue operations, management consulting, strategy, or growth / product analytics - ideally somewhere that was growing quickly
- A strong analytical toolkit: highly capable with spreadsheet modelling; and experience working with AI for deep analysis, and BI tools such as QuickSight, Looker or Tableau
- A first-principles approach to problems: the ability to take an ambiguous situation apart, question the assumptions built into it, and arrive at a model, a number and a recommendation
- A working understanding of experiment design: holdouts, sample size, and how to judge whether a result reflects a real effect
- Clear communication: the ability to explain your thinking in writing and in person, and to make a case to someone senior, calmly, when the evidence supports it.
- A tendency to see things through: you take an idea, do the work to move it forward, and follow up without needing to be chased
Nice-to-haves
- Some exposure to pensions, financial services, payroll or workplace benefits, or another regulated industry with both business and consumer customers
- Experience with dbt or a similar data warehouse, and with tools used for running experiments, such as Statsig
- Familiarity with CRM or lifecycle marketing platforms, and how marketing attribution works.
- Exposure to a business where teams are measured against commercial targets.
What We’re Looking For
This role suits someone who takes a considered, evidence-led approach to a commercial problem. You will probably recognise yourself if:
- You back up a recommendation with a model and a number
- You can take a vague, messy problem, work out what is actually being asked, and get to a clear answer
- You know how to set up an experiment properly, and can tell when a result is worth trusting
- You are comfortable coordinating work that spans several teams at once
- You care whether your analysis actually changes what the team does next
Be prepared to work hard! Ultimately, we’re looking for smart, hardworking & energetic people who get stuff done & are committed to contributing to a great team. So, if you’re excited about what we’re doing, get in touch – definitely don’t be put off if you don’t tick every box!
Our application process:
- Intro Call (30 mins) – get to know Penfold and briefly discuss your experience.
- Experience Deep-Dive (45 - 60 mins) – walk through a piece of work you have owned; discuss your approach, your results, and how you work day to day
- Take-Home Task (max 120 mins) – to see how you structure a problem, reach a number, and explain it.
- Task Review + discussion (60 mins)
- Culture Fit (up to 45 mins with 3 people from other departments)
Benefits:
We’re working hard to create a working environment where people feel empowered to do their very best work, make a big impact, and enjoy what they do. Specifically, our benefits package includes:
- A competitive salary; we proactively review salaries to make sure you get what you deserve
- Meaningful share options, you’ll own a part of Penfold and share in our success
- 10% pension contribution each month that you don’t need to match (on top of your salary)
- Medical insurance, through Vitality
- Unlimited holiday, we’re interested in your output, not how many holidays you go on!
- Hybrid working, we like people to come in to our office (so it would be great if you lived in the London area) at least a couple of days a week to collaborate, but we trust you to get your work done in whatever environment suits you
- Great community office space, plenty of people come into our wonderful private office near Borough Underground station.
- Free tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks
- Free company lunch every week (e.g., Borough Market, Mercato Metropolitano)
- Laptop and any WFH equipment you need
- Option to buy a bike tax free, and spread the cost (using the cycle to work scheme)
- Learning and Professional Development – we conduct regular 360 feedback and focus on role progression that suits each individual. We support everyone with courses, events and coaching to help everyone reach their goals
- Quarterly company socials, and regular meet-ups throughout the year too!
- Plus a host of other benefits – see here: https://getpenfold.com/careers
