Hardware Staff Engineer East Kilbride, Scotland (Onsite/Hybrid) Your Impact As a Hardware Staff Engineer , you will provide senior technical leadership in the development of advanced monitoring, protection, recording, and analytics solutions used throughout electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution networks. You will be a recognised technical expert responsible for leading the design and implementation of complex electronic hardware solutions. Working closely with Systems, Firmware, Software, Mechanical, Test, Manufacturing, and Product Management teams, you will solve challenging technical problems, guide design decisions, and ensure robust, high-quality products are delivered from concept through deployment and lifecycle support. This role combines hands-on technical contribution with engineering leadership, requiring deep expertise in electronic design, strong problem-solving capability, and the ability to mentor and influence teams across multiple projects. Here's where you'll demonstrate your proficiencies: Lead the design and development of embedded electronic hardware for monitoring, protection, recording, and industrial instrumentation products. Translate system and product requirements into robust hardware designs that meet performance, reliability, regulatory, manufacturing, and cost objectives. Design, analyse, and review analogue, mixed-signal, digital, power, and communications circuitry for mission-critical industrial applications. Collaborate closely with Architects, Firmware, Software, Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Test teams to deliver integrated product solutions. Drive technical investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions for complex design, manufacturing, qualification, and field issues. Perform technical trade-off analysis involving performance, accuracy, reliability, maintainability, manufacturability, lifecycle cost, and customer requirements. Lead schematic design, component selection, circuit simulation, design verification, laboratory evaluation, and PCB design reviews. Support architecture implementation by contributing technical expertise to system-level design decisions and product platform development. Lead and contribute to technical design reviews, engineering governance activities, and development best practices. Define and execute hardware verification, validation, qualification, and compliance testing activities. Support New Product Introduction (NPI), sustaining engineering, product enhancements, value engineering, and component obsolescence management. Identify technical risks early, develop mitigation plans, and provide leadership during complex technical challenges. Mentor engineers and promote engineering excellence through coaching, knowledge sharing, and technical leadership. Qualifications The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline. Experience developing embedded electronic hardware products, including significant experience delivering complex designs from concept through production and lifecycle support. Proven experience designing mixed-signal, analogue, digital, and embedded electronic systems. Strong understanding of electronic design fundamentals, including signal integrity, power integrity, EMC, thermal management, reliability, and industrial product design. Experience developing hardware platforms incorporating embedded processors, communication interfaces, data acquisition systems, sensing technologies, and industrial networking. Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical investigations and make sound engineering decisions within multidisciplinary teams. Experience supporting product verification, validation, regulatory compliance, and production release processes. Strong communication, collaboration, technical leadership, and stakeholder management skills. Proven ability to influence technical direction and mentor engineers without direct line management responsibility. Preferred Skills Experience designing ARM-based embedded systems, Linux-based platforms, real-time systems, and FPGA-based solutions. Experience with power system monitoring, protection, fault recording, power quality, condition monitoring, or substation automation products. Knowledge of IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-104, and other industrial communication protocols. Experience with precision timing technologies including GPS, GNSS, IRIG-B, IEEE 1588 PTP, and NTP. Experience designing precision sensing, signal conditioning, and measurement systems. Familiarity with cybersecurity principles applicable to embedded products and critical infrastructure environments. Experience with EMC compliance, electrical safety standards, environmental qualification, CE, UL, IEC, and IEEE requirements. Understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), Design for Serviceability (DFS), and reliability engineering principles. Experience supporting supply chain activities including component lifecycle management, alternative component qualification, and obsolescence mitigation. Familiarity with simulation, modelling, test automation, and hardware validation methodologies. Leadership Expectations In this role you will be recognised as a senior technical contributor and subject matter expert within the organisation. You will be expected to: Provide technical leadership across multiple projects and product development activities. Serve as a recognised authority for complex hardware design, analysis, and problem-solving activities. Collaborate effectively with Architects, Firmware Engineers, Software Engineers, and cross-functional teams to deliver integrated solutions. Drive engineering excellence through technical reviews, development standards, best practices, and mentoring activities. Contribute to technology roadmaps and innovation initiatives through deep technical expertise and industry knowledge. Coach and develop engineers while fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence. Champion product quality, reliability, manufacturability, maintainability, and customer value throughout the product lifecycle. Lead by example through strong technical judgement, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. LI-SM1
