About HAVORA
HAVORA is building a more intentional approach to modern relationships focused on deeper compatibility, meaningful human connection, trust, and helping people make more informed relationship decisions.
We are currently bootstrapped and building our MVP. We are looking for a Senior Android Developer who can take full ownership of the Android application and work alongside our Senior iOS Engineer, Senior Full Stack Engineer, Product Managers, and Product Designers.
This is not a role for someone who needs constant supervision.
We are looking for an experienced engineer who can own the Android product from architecture through production, make strong technical decisions, and help establish the foundations for a scalable mobile application.
⸻
The Role
As our Senior Android Developer, you will be responsible for designing, building, testing, and continuously improving HAVORA’s native Android application.
You will work closely with the Product and Design teams to translate product requirements and designs into a polished, secure, reliable, and scalable Android experience.
You will also collaborate with our iOS and full-stack engineers to ensure that the mobile applications communicate effectively with HAVORA’s shared backend infrastructure.
⸻
Key Responsibilities
Android Development
* Take full ownership of HAVORA’s Android application.
* Design and implement scalable Android architecture.
* Build high-quality, production-ready features using modern Android development practices.
* Translate Figma/product designs into accurate and responsive Android interfaces.
* Build onboarding, authentication, profiles, relationship assessments, matching, messaging, notifications, subscription and other core product experiences.
* Ensure excellent performance, responsiveness and reliability.
* Implement appropriate offline and network-state handling where required.
* Integrate the Android application with HAVORA’s backend APIs.
* Work closely with the Senior iOS Engineer to maintain consistency across Android and iOS experiences.
Architecture & Engineering
* Make sound architectural decisions for the Android application.
* Apply appropriate design patterns and separation of concerns.
* Write clean, maintainable and well-documented code.
* Build reusable components and modules.
* Identify technical risks early and propose practical solutions.
* Contribute to technical planning and engineering standards.
* Ensure the application can evolve as HAVORA scales.
Backend Integration
You will not be responsible for owning the entire backend, but you should be comfortable working with backend systems.
You should understand:
* REST APIs
* JSON
* Authentication
* API integration
* Error handling
* Database-backed applications
* Real-time data where required
* Secure communication between mobile applications and backend services
You will work with our full-stack engineers who will own the primary backend infrastructure.
⸻

⸻
Networking & APIs
Strong understanding of:
* RESTful APIs
* HTTP/HTTPS
* JSON
* API authentication
* OAuth/JWT concepts
* Secure API communication
* Network error handling

Database: PostgreSQL / Supabase
Mobile: Native Swift/SwiftUI for iOS + Native Kotlin/Android for Android
The Android application will communicate with the shared HAVORA backend, rather than maintaining a separate backend.
⸻
What We’re Looking For Beyond Technical Skills
Technical ability is important, but ownership matters just as much.
We want someone who:
* Has 5+ years of professional Android development experience.
* Has shipped real Android applications to production.
* Can work independently.
* Does not require constant hand-holding.
* Can take a product requirement and turn it into an implementation plan.
* Can challenge technical decisions constructively.
* Understands product thinking, not just coding.
* Cares about user experience.
* Communicates clearly with Product, Design and Engineering.
* Can identify problems and solve them proactively.
* Is comfortable working in an early-stage startup environment.
* Takes deadlines and commitments seriously.
* Is willing to contribute meaningfully to building HAVORA from the ground up.
⸻
Compensation & Founding Opportunity
HAVORA is currently bootstrapped and pre-revenue.
Therefore, this is currently a:
Volunteer, unpaid position.
There is:
* No salary at this stage.
* No stipend at this stage.
* No guaranteed future compensation.
We want to be completely transparent about this.
As HAVORA grows, generates significant revenue and expands its engineering organisation, high-performing founding contributors will be considered for permanent paid positions and future leadership opportunities, based on performance, contribution, business needs and available roles.
This is an opportunity to join HAVORA at an early stage and have meaningful ownership over one of the core products we are building.
⸻
Why Join HAVORA?
As an early engineering contributor, you will have the opportunity to:
* Own a major part of HAVORA’s Android product.
* Influence technical decisions from the beginning.
* Work closely with Product, Design and Engineering leadership.
* Build a product intended for users across Africa and beyond.
* Help establish engineering standards as the company grows.
* Build something from the ground up rather than inheriting an established codebase.
* Potentially grow into a senior technical leadership position as HAVORA scales.
⸻
How to Apply
If you’re interested, please send:
* Your CV
* GitHub or portfolio
* Links to Android applications you have shipped, where possible
* A brief summary of your Android engineering experience
* Any relevant projects or products you have worked on
Please apply only if you are comfortable with the current volunteer structure and can genuinely commit the time required to contribute consistently.
