About The Role

Flogas is seeking a Head of Engineering to provide strategic and functional leadership for customer and operational engineering across the LPG business on the island of Ireland. As the senior engineering authority, you will be accountable for engineering governance, technical standards, asset integrity and the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of installations, maintenance and engineering projects. You will lead and develop the engineering function, advise the senior leadership team on technical risk and investment priorities, and ensure that engineering capability, resources and systems support sustainable growth, operational resilience and an excellent customer experience.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Set and deliver the engineering strategy, operating model and annual plan, aligned with business objectives, regulatory obligations and the long-term needs of the LPG asset base.
  • Act as the senior engineering authority for the business, providing clear technical governance, direction and assurance on engineering decisions, designs, standards, deviations and non-standard installations.
  • Own the engineering management system, ensuring policies, procedures, technical standards and records remain current, effective and compliant with applicable legislation, codes and recognised good practice.
  • Provide assurance that LPG installations, customer assets and associated engineering activities are designed, commissioned, operated, maintained, modified and decommissioned safely and in accordance with approved standards.
  • Lead the engineering input to major projects, asset investment programmes and change initiatives, ensuring robust design reviews, risk assessments, management of change and handover arrangements.
  • Establish and monitor engineering performance indicators covering safety, compliance, service, reliability, quality, productivity and cost, reporting material risks and trends to the senior leadership team.
  • Lead engineering assurance activities, including audits, inspections and technical reviews; maintain oversight of corrective actions and support effective engagement with regulators, inspectors and other external authorities.
  • Direct the delivery of tank installations, site upgrades, removals, servicing and maintenance through internal teams and contractors, ensuring priorities, resources and controls are proportionate to risk and customer need.
  • Lead, coach and develop the engineering team, setting clear objectives, accountabilities and competency requirements and maintaining effective succession and workforce plans.
  • Own the governance of engineering contractors and specialist suppliers, including selection, technical competence, performance, assurance and compliance with company and legal requirements.
  • Own the engineering OPEX and CAPEX budgets, business cases and investment prioritisation, ensuring effective financial control, value for money and transparent forecasting and reporting.
  • Build strong relationships across Operations, HSE, Quality, Commercial, Sales, Supply and Finance, champion a proactive engineering and safety culture, lead responses to significant technical incidents or escalations, and drive continuous improvement, innovation and standardisation across the function.

About The Candidate

  • The successful candidate will be an experienced engineering leader with the credibility to act as a senior technical authority in a safety-critical, regulated environment. You will combine sound engineering judgement with commercial awareness, visible leadership and the ability to translate business strategy into disciplined execution.
  • Leadership: Builds a high-performing function, creates clarity of purpose and accountability, develops capability and succession, and role-models high standards of safety and integrity.
  • Strategic Thinking: Anticipates emerging technical, regulatory and operational risks and shapes long-term engineering, asset and investment priorities.
  • Governance and Judgement: Makes timely, evidence-based decisions, provides constructive challenge and maintains clear control of technical risk, standards and assurance.
  • Delivery: Converts priorities into executable plans, allocates resources effectively and holds teams and partners accountable for safe, high-quality outcomes.
  • Influence: Communicates complex technical matters clearly, builds confidence with senior stakeholders and external authorities, and gains commitment across organisational boundaries.
  • Commercial Acumen: Balances risk, service, reliability and whole-life cost and makes well-supported recommendations on expenditure and investment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Uses data, learning and external good practice to simplify processes, improve engineering performance and strengthen organisational capability.

Skills And Experience Required For Success

  • Engineering leadership experience in gas, energy, utilities, process, infrastructure or another safety-critical and regulated environment.
  • Demonstrable accountability for an engineering function, multidisciplinary team or substantial portfolio of operational assets, projects and contractors.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering governance, asset integrity, process safety, risk management, management of change and regulatory compliance.
  • A track record of setting technical standards, assuring engineering work and making or endorsing complex, risk-based technical decisions.
  • Proven leadership of people, including performance management, competency development, workforce planning and succession planning.
  • Experience managing significant OPEX and CAPEX budgets, developing business cases and prioritising investment using safety, risk, service and whole-life value considerations.
  • Excellent stakeholder, communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to advise senior leaders and engage credibly with regulators, auditors, customers and technical specialists.
  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification in an appropriate engineering discipline; Chartered Engineer status, or demonstrable progress towards it, is highly desirable.
  • Experience of LPG, pressure systems, hazardous areas, gas distribution or customer energy installations, together with knowledge of relevant Irish and European requirements, is highly advantageous.
  • A full driving licence and willingness to travel across the island of Ireland and, where required, to other business or supplier locations.
