Head of Practice Technology & Operations

A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced public practice accounting professional with a passion for systems, technology, AI and operational improvement to help shape the future of an established Melbourne accounting firm. This is not a traditional accounting role. We are seeking someone who deeply understands how modern accounting firms operate, including workflow management, review processes, workpapers, cloud accounting ecosystems and team collaboration, and who can help us continually raise the bar on how we work. This role sits at the centre of a long-standing firm with a substantial client base. Working closely with the General Manager and broader team, you will drive innovation, efficiency and scalability through smarter systems, better processes and emerging technology. What You'll Be Doing Taking ownership of the firm's cloud-based app stack, driving continual optimisation across systems, integrations and workflows across accounting, administration and operations Developing and enhancing workpapers, templates, internal procedures and process documentation to drive consistency, best practice and standardisation across teams and client delivery Identifying and implementing automation and AI opportunities to improve efficiency, scalability, data integrity and internal reporting capability Supporting staff onboarding, training and process adoption while collaborating with offshore team members to integrate workflows and communication Implementing practical operational improvements that enhance overall firm performance What You'll Bring Strong public practice accounting experience with a deep understanding of how modern firms operate Practical experience in a cloud-based accounting environment, particularly Xero and the broader Xero app ecosystem Strong understanding of best-practice workflows across tax, compliance, advisory and accounting production Experience reviewing and improving workpaper systems and internal firm workflows An understanding of how high-performing firms use automation, AI and technology to drive efficiency Familiarity with practice management systems, workflow tools, document management and cloud integrations The ability to identify operational inefficiencies and implement practical improvements Experience supporting offshore accounting workflows and remote team collaboration Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to bridge accounting, systems and technology Excellent communication and collaboration skills across all levels of a firm A genuine passion for innovation, operational excellence and helping firms evolve What's on Offer Flexible hours between 7am and 7pm with reasonable, sustainable workloads Hybrid work arrangements Modern cloud-based systems Perks include social events, an annual offsite conference, a day off on your birthday and dress for your day For more information, please contact Georgie at [email protected] or simply apply.
