At AstraZeneca, we are committed to improving patient outcomes through science, evidence, and innovation. We are now looking for an experienced Health Data Scientist to take on a core role in our Nordic Medical Evidence & Health Data team, based in Stockholm, Sweden.
AstraZeneca Nordic Marketing Company employs around 550 people with offices in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, and Espoo. Across the Nordics, AstraZeneca is a recognized leader within its therapy areas, driven by innovative science and strong partnerships within healthcare – all with the ambition to improve the lives of millions of patients.
About the role
This is a core technical role, responsible for building, managing, and analysing Nordic healthcare databases using a broad range of data sources. You will independently bring together complex data from multiple sources, create robust, scalable, and analysis-ready datasets, and lead analyses that deliver high-quality scientific publications and insights.
You will work across the Nordic region, based in our Stockholm office, and partner closely with epidemiology and project manager colleagues in Evidence & Health Data, Medical, Access, and analytics teams, as well as with external stakeholders such as data providers, registrer holders, and academic partners. You will work with both anonymised and pseudonymised data from registries, electronic medical records, laboratory, prescription, hospital, and diagnostic sources. It suits a technically strong data professional with a structured, quality-driven mindset, who takes pride in turning complex, heterogeneous real-world data into robust, analysis-ready assets that enable high-quality evidence generation and better patient outcomes.
This is an office-based role where you are expected to be in the office 3 days/week.
In this role, you will
- Independently establish and maintain integrated healthcare datasets by combining and structuring data from a wide range of sources in Sweden and across the Nordic countries.
- Independently manage end-to-end data workflows across multiple healthcare datasets and countries, from ingestion and transformation through harmonisation, linkage, documentation, and version control.
- Identify and resolve data quality issues, validate datasets, and build reproducible cleaning workflows to ensure datasets are high quality and fit for evidence generation.
- Lead and conduct analyses on routine healthcare datasets that answer important questions about patient populations, pathways, treatment patterns, outcomes, and healthcare utilisation.
- Create SAPs based on study protocols and knowledge of the data sources, and conduct analyses in accordance to SAPs to produce final TLFs.
- Lead the design of analysis datasets, variable and algorithm derivations, code lists, and study specifications in collaboration with evidence and medical colleagues.
- Develop and maintain clear technical documentation, visualisations, and reporting outputs to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and interpretation of results.
- Lead and implement AI-assisted approaches to automate data quality checks and flag anomalies at scale.
- Provide expert guidance to internal and external stakeholders, leading cross-functional workstreams and influencing without authority as a Subject Matter Expert.
- Ensure all data handling, linkage, and analyses are carried out in line with applicable data privacy, governance, ethical, and regulatory requirements.
Essential experience and capabilities
- Master’s degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, data science, health informatics, public health, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5-10 years or equivalent experience working with Nordic healthcare data/real-world data in healthcare, life sciences, public health, or related settings.
- Proven experience integrating and managing data from multiple healthcare sources, with strong data cleaning, transformation, and preparation skills.
- Strong statistical and analytical skills, with demonstrated experience in healthcare data analysis such as descriptive studies, regression, and survival analysis.
- Proficiency in SQL, R, Python, and/or SAS.
- Knowledge of healthcare coding systems such as ICD, ICD-O-3, SNOMED, and ATC and standards such as OMOP
- Understanding of healthcare data privacy, governance, confidentiality, and regulatory requirements.
- Structured, quality-focused approach with strong attention to detail and reproducibility.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical findings for non-technical audiences.
- Fluent in English and one Nordic Language; Swedish language fluency highly preferred.
Desirable experience
- Hands-on expertise with the Nordic healthcare data landscape and country-specific data structures.
- Experience with data applications and analyzing data from Socialstyrelsen, SCB, Sundhedsdatastyrelsen, Statistics Denmark, Findata, and similar datasets.
- Experience working with regional healthcare data in Sweden (e.g., VAL-databasen, primary care, laboratory data, etc).
- Expertise in regulations for healthcare data in Sweden
- Experience supporting observational studies, evidence generation, or healthcare analytics projects.
- PhD in Pharmacoepidemiology/Epidemiology or similar experience supporting pharmacoepidemiological studies with a proven track record of advancing approaches with data science.
- Expertise with applying AI/ML tools to healthcare data, such as using LLMs for project management, code generation, quality control, NLP, and more.
- Experience working in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Ability to lead and manage multiple cross-functional data science workstreams and projects.
