Job Title: Health & Safety Director / Principal Designer (combined role)

Reporting to: SBE Director of Health & Safety

Location: One day to be moday or friday Erebus Project Office, Bristol. Mininum of 3 days in the Office.

About Erebus by Blue Gem Wind:

Erebus is a world leading 100 MW test and demonstration floating offshore wind project located off the coast of Pembroke and is being developed by Simply Blue Energy’s Blue Gem Wind project company. Erebus was awarded a CfD in Allocation Round 7 and as a fully consented project now enters late-stage development, targeting a COD in 2030. The project is progressing through project finance structuring towards Financial Close.

While focused on Erebus, the postholder is part of the SBE Project Excellence Solutions (PES) team and may occasionally support PES activities to maintain alignment across functions.


Key Responsibilities



CDM Principal Designer duties

  • Coordinate pre-construction H&S across all Erebus design packages, Pre-FEED to construction, per CDM 2015.
  • Work with the Design Risk Manager to eliminate/reduce hazards in design decisions (floating structure, mooring, cabling, substation, installation/access).
  • Maintain the design risk register, DRAs, ALARP register; compile PCI and Health and Safety File at each gateway.
  • Coordinate H&S input across designers, close out interface hazards, prepare F10 notification.


Health & Safety Director duties

  • Establish and lead the project HSMS (ISO 45001, G9/GWO) across in-house contractor packages, developing the Execution Phase H&S Plan.
  • Set and audit contractor HSMS compliance; lead pre-qualification/tender reviews and HAZOP/HAZID workshops.
  • Own H&S strategy and policy; chair governance and incident/near-miss reviews.
  • Liaise with the Independent Verification Body and HSE; report to SBE H&S Director and Blue Gem Wind Board.


Marine, regulatory and interface responsibilities

  • Lead marine operations planning and MWS liaison; support consenting/lease obligations; provide H&S evidence for Lender's due diligence and FID sign-off.
  • Coordinate H&S interfaces across contracted packages with the Process Safety Engineer on major accident hazards.


Health & Safety PES Excellence

  • Improve H&S tools, templates and guidance; update Simply Blueprint.
  • Join PES workshops/Chinwags and team meetings; share lessons learned and progress reports.
  • Interface with other PES/SBE functions.
  • Track legislation and best practice; keep Simply Blueprint current.
  • Support fundraising/shareholder transactions with due diligence input.


Experience and Qualifications:



Required:

  • 10 years' relevant experience in health & safety in construction or engineering.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the offshore wind sector, including at least 3 years’ senior health & safety leadership experience.
  • At least 5 years’ demonstrable experience acting as Principal Designer and/or leading health & safety on at least one major project, ideally through to Final Investment Decision (FID), in offshore wind, renewables or large-scale infrastructure.
  • Strong, hands-on health & safety and design risk management experience — hazard identification, risk assessment and control, and change management on complex, multi-contractor capital projects.
  • Proven experience building and managing a health & safety team, including direct line management responsibility.
  • Strong working knowledge of CDM 2015, design risk management processes and health & safety management systems for large capital projects.
  • Ability to communicate health & safety performance and risk status clearly and credibly to senior stakeholders, including boards, sponsors and lenders.
  • Excellent organisation skills with the ability to manage own workload, meet timescales and coordinate a number of external and internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to enable effective discussion and transfer of information between design team, team members and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work as a member of a large, multidisciplinary and international team.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, with the ability to use relevant applications effectively to support analysis, reporting and senior-level communication.
  • Ability to create and communicate complex technical information clearly.

Desired:

  • Relevant degree in engineering, construction, health & safety, or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years’ experience of offshore wind project development in the UK.
  • The technical skills to understand complex offshore operations and the ability to exchange with and understand subject experts.
