Help Topic Category Assistant

Customer Service · Website Navigation · Remote
£28.75–£30.75 hourly | Full-time or part-time

An online help area is easier to use when articles appear under topics people recognise.

The Help Topic Category Assistant reviews assigned articles and checks whether their existing topic label matches an approved classification guide. You may update a category where the guide is clear, or flag an article that could reasonably fit more than one. This remote customer service support role is about navigation and findability, not rewriting the article or making a policy decision about its content.

A title is a clue, not the whole answer

An article called ‘Changing your details’ may cover a contact preference, a billing address or something else. You would read enough to identify the task it actually explains, then compare it with the team’s categories. Where the guide says an article belongs under a specific topic, you can apply that label through the online system if authorised. If the subject crosses two areas and the tool allows only one primary category, the content owner should decide. You should not add several unrelated labels just to make the article appear everywhere.

The goal is a help area that supports a visitor’s next step. A person with a billing question should not have to browse a general account folder if an approved billing category is available. At the same time, moving an article to a more appealing topic does not solve a problem with its actual instructions. You would record that separate issue for the content team, not silently rewrite it as part of categorisation.

A topic change can affect how a colleague points a customer to an article. For that reason, your tracking note should identify the earlier category and the approved new one. If a link in a standard response refers to the old location, flag it for the customer support team. You do not need to revise every message yourself, but you should make the relationship between a navigation change and its downstream use visible.

A category review in practice

You may receive a group of existing help pages and the approved topic list. Open an article, identify its main question and record its current category. Compare that with the guide, then make a permitted change or leave a concise question. After a change, check how the article appears in the online help area. If the system has a search index that updates later, the team will explain what result you should verify; you should not claim an immediate search result if you have not seen it.

The work may include:

  • Reviewing the primary purpose of an assigned help article.
  • Comparing its current topic with an approved category guide.
  • Updating a clear, permitted category in the content system.
  • Flagging an article that spans several topics for the content owner.
  • Checking that a moved article can still be reached through the help navigation.
  • Recording the before-and-after category where required.
  • Noting a broken page separately from a category issue.
  • Keeping a batch of checked articles and open questions organised.

This role differs from testing the accuracy of every instruction on a help page. You would read for the main topic and useful placement. If a customer service colleague reports that people cannot find a particular answer, you may check its label and location. That feedback is evidence to investigate, not automatic permission to change the site’s taxonomy. The employer will teach the online editor, approved categories and review process.

Applicants with little formal experience are welcome. Office administration or customer support experience can help, but it is not required. You should be comfortable reading a short page, using a browser and writing a specific note about why a label seems wrong. Training will cover the particular content system. A person who has organised learning materials or shared documents may have transferable skills.

The work is remote and can be full-time or part-time. A home office area suitable for focused reading is helpful. The range is £28.75–£30.75 per hour. You will not be responsible for setting the company’s support policy or rewriting specialist answers.

Application information

You may describe any experience sorting information into useful topics, helping people find a document or maintaining an online page. A formal website title is not necessary. We welcome someone who can use the supplied guide and recognise when a category needs the owner’s judgement. If you’re selected for the next step, you may be asked to complete an application on the hiring company’s website. Your first application should show your practical reading and organisation skills.
