JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position is unique to the Legislative Branch.

The Legislative Assistant (LA) is a professional support role within the House Majority Caucus, providing dedicated, high-quality assistance to members of the Utah House of Representatives. Legislative Assistants help legislators efficiently manage their responsibilities during the legislative session and throughout the year, serving as a critical link between representatives, constituents, and the broader legislative process.

This is not a career service position and incumbents serve in an at-will basis. Incumbents serve in a partisan capacity and must be willing to work extended hours and weekends during the legislative session, the interim, or as needed.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
•Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned legislators, addressing questions, comments, and concerns.
•Proactively reach out on a weekly basis to provide important updates and offer assistance.
•Serve as a resource and mentor for legislative interns during the session.
•Connect legislators with contacts from state agencies and other legislative offices.
•Organize and manage legislators’ email accounts via Microsoft Outlook, ensuring timely responses and inbox efficiency.
•Keep legislators informed of meeting requests received via email and proactively manage their calendars.
•Schedule meetings on legislators’ behalf with other legislators, lobbyists, stakeholders, and constituents.
•Draft professional, thoughtful responses to constituent inquiries and ensure concerns are addressed promptly.
•Check and respond to physical mail received in legislators’ mailboxes.
•Coordinate logistical details for legislative appointments, including facilities, meals, and equipment as needed.
•Assist in planning and executing events such as town halls, constituent engagement activities, and bill signings.
•Monitor legislative progress on key bills and maintain up-to-date tracking documentation.
•Provide clerical and secretarial support including note-taking, document organization, and list management.
•Greet visitors and provide staff support in meetings as needed.
•Assist in drafting reports, documents, or other written materials as directed.
•Support the coordination of all-day caucus events, and professional development programming for representatives.
•Assist with other conferences and events to raise awareness, engage constituents and stakeholders, and elevate the Legislature.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
•Holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration, public policy, communications, political science or related field.
•Has strong organizational, writing, communications, and interpersonal skills.
•Can work independently on multiple tasks.

Salary Range – The pay range for this position is between $25.00 and $27.00 hourly plus comprehensive medical, dental, leave, and retirement benefits. The starting salary will be determined based on the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications.
