Job Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced IBM iSeries (AS/400) Infrastructure Administrator – L3 to lead the administration, optimization, modernization, and support of enterprise IBM i environments.
The ideal candidate will serve as the highest level of technical escalation for IBM i infrastructure, with strong expertise in performance tuning, security, backup and recovery, high availability, disaster recovery, storage, HMC, VIOS, and IBM Power systems.
The role requires strong technical leadership, solution design capabilities, vendor coordination, and the ability to mentor L1/L2 support teams while ensuring the reliability, availability, and security of business-critical IBM i platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Escalation
- Provide L3 technical leadership and mentoring to L1 Operators and L2 Administrators.
- Handle complex infrastructure incidents and critical escalations.
- Develop operational procedures, standards, and IBM i best practices.
- Support architecture reviews and infrastructure planning.
IBM i Administration & Performance
- Administer and optimize IBM i environments.
- Perform performance analysis, system assessments, and capacity planning.
- Monitor system health, availability, and operational metrics.
- Prepare executive-level reports on infrastructure performance and availability.
Security Administration
- Design and administer IBM i security policies and controls.
- Manage SSL and Digital Certificates.
- Configure and maintain SSH security and secure key generation.
- Support security audits, compliance, and vulnerability remediation.
Backup, Recovery & DR
- Monitor and manage enterprise backup schedules.
- Troubleshoot backup failures, unsaved objects, and BRMS issues.
- Develop and maintain backup and recovery strategies.
- Design and support High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) environments.
- Lead DR testing, failover, and failback activities.
- Ensure RPO/RTO requirements are met.
Storage & IFS
- Administer internal and external storage environments.
- Perform storage expansion, disk balancing, and performance tuning.
- Administer and secure the Integrated File System (IFS).
- Manage SAN connectivity and storage presentation.
Network Administration
- Configure and troubleshoot TCP/IP networking on IBM i.
- Manage connectivity between IBM i systems, HMCs, tape libraries, and integrated services.
Job & Workload Management
- Administer Advanced Job Scheduler (AJS) environments.
- Design and manage production job scheduling strategies.
Tape & Device Administration
- Administer enterprise tape libraries and tape devices.
- Manage firmware upgrades, media lifecycle, movement, and retention policies.
System Maintenance & Upgrades
- Plan and execute IBM i OS upgrades and PTF management.
- Lead infrastructure maintenance, upgrade, and migration activities.
- Support application deployments across IBM i partitions.
HMC Administration
- Install, configure, and administer Hardware Management Console (HMC).
- Manage managed systems, frames, and LPARs.
- Perform HMC updates, upgrades, backups, and recovery.
- Configure HMC user access, security, and monitoring.
- Plan and execute IBM Power server firmware upgrades.
- Validate compatibility between Power firmware, HMC, VIOS, and IBM i OS.
- Perform pre- and post-upgrade health checks.
- Troubleshoot firmware-related issues.
- Manage Call Home configuration and SSL certificate updates.
VIOS Administration
- Install, configure, and maintain Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) environments.
- Configure Virtual SCSI, NPIV, Virtual Ethernet, and Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA).
- Manage storage presentation and SAN connectivity.
- Perform VIOS upgrades, patching, and troubleshooting.
- Manage LPAR disk allocation and removal through VIOS.
- Configure Virtual Media Library for IBM i LPAR OS loads.
- Configure and manage VTLs for backup.
- Ensure high availability and redundancy of virtualized resources.
Required Skills
- IBM i / AS400 infrastructure administration experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with IBM i, IBM Power Systems, and LPARs.
- Expertise in HMC and VIOS administration.
- Strong knowledge of IBM i performance management and capacity planning.
- Experience with BRMS, backup/recovery, HA, and DR.
- Strong knowledge of IBM i security, SSL certificates, Digital Certificates, SSH, and secure key management.
- Experience with IFS, SAN, storage, and tape libraries.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking on IBM i.
- Experience with Advanced Job Scheduler.
- Hands-on experience with IBM i OS upgrades, PTF management, and Power firmware upgrades.
- Experience managing production IBM i environments and critical incidents.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Willingness to participate in 24x7 on-call and critical incident support.
