ICT Infrastructure & Data Systems Engineer

Are you an experienced IT engineer looking to make a direct impact on core infrastructure and data environments? Appella is seeking an autonomous, skilled ICT Infrastructure & Data Systems Engineer to support our operations near Ghent on a contract/freelance basis.

In this role, you will play a central part in maintaining, strengthening, and evolving our ICT infrastructure and underlying data systems. Working closely with our technical teams, you will ensure high availability, strong operational performance, and resilient data processing pipelines. This contract role offers a hybrid setup with remote work options by agreement, combined with presence near our base in East Flanders and occasional visits to other operational sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage, monitor, and optimise core ICT infrastructure environments to ensure continuous reliability, security, and performance.
• Design, implement, and maintain robust data systems, storage solutions, and operational data pipelines.
• Troubleshoot complex technical incidents across infrastructure components and data platforms, delivering effective root-cause resolutions.
• Collaborate on system migrations, capacity planning, and architecture enhancements aligned with operational requirements.
• Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, backup routines, and disaster recovery procedures.

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven track record as an ICT Infrastructure Engineer, Systems Engineer, or Data Systems Specialist.
• Solid technical expertise in systems administration, network configurations, server infrastructure, and storage environments.
• Practical hands-on experience in managing and supporting enterprise database systems and data platforms.
• Fluency in Dutch (spoken and written), along with professional communication skills in English.
• Ability to work on-site near Ghent (East Flanders) as needed, with flexibility for occasional travel to other locations.

Nice-to-Have

• Relevant vendor certifications in infrastructure, cloud, or database technologies.
• Experience with scripting and automation tools to streamline routine infrastructure maintenance.
• Familiarity with modern data integration frameworks and containerised environments.
