Want to bring your third-line expertise to an organisation where technology is quite literally on display?
About us
The Science Museum Group is the world's leading group of science museums. It brings together the Science Museum in London, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, the National Railway Museum in York, Locomotion in Shildon and the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford. Our Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton is home to much of our world-class collection. Every year, millions of visitors come through our doors to explore stories of science, technology, engineering and innovation. Our mission is to inspire futures, and we care for our collection so that people everywhere can enjoy it for generations to come.
Our ICT team supports all of this behind the scenes. We look after the systems and infrastructure that keep our museums, collections, staff and visitors connected and secure.
About the role
As part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team, you will provide quality technical services to our customer and infrastructure operations along with project functions within ICT. You will be engaged in work across a range from desktop support to 3rd line infrastructure (server, network, virtualisation) and Service Desk cover support as needed; maintaining and improving customer satisfaction is key.
When not supporting customer and infrastructure operations, projects and tasks will be assigned and scheduled by the Service Delivery Manager who will coordinate priorities and requirements.
Whilst having your own expertise, you will have great opportunities to gain and share experience and knowledge over a wide spectrum of systems that the ICT team support. You will have every opportunity to use this exposure, and the diversity it brings, to develop your career in IT, developing skills through both informal and formal training and through on-the-job learning.
As part of this role, you will also be expected to participate in established out-of-hours services to support service delivery.
This is a full-time, fixed-term role until October 2028, with a salary of £47,584 per annum. The role is based at the Science Museum in London and offers hybrid working, typically with three days a week on site and two from home, with the exact arrangement agreed with your line manager. You'll also be part of our on-call rota, with occasional out-of-hours work, and will need to be willing to travel across our sites when needed, including Wroughton in Wiltshire. Travel costs are covered.
About you
We're keen to see applications from candidates who have solid third-line experience supporting a complex, varied IT environment, ideally one with multiple sites, public-facing services and plenty of moving parts, like ours. You'll be confident across Windows 11, Microsoft 365 and Active Directory. You'll also have hands-on experience supporting networks and firewalls, along with at least a couple of other areas, such as servers, virtualisation, backup or cloud services in AWS and Azure. Experience with Juniper or Fortinet kit, PowerShell scripting, or frameworks like ITIL or PRINCE2 would be a real bonus. Even so, we care most about how well you understand the way systems fit together and how you work through problems when they don't.
We're equally keen to hear from candidates who are strong communicators and can bring people with them. Much of this role is project work: you'll brief and support contractors on site, keep project managers and stakeholders updated, and explain technical decisions clearly and confidently to colleagues at every level, right up to our senior leadership team. You'll thrive in a close, collaborative team where knowledge is shared freely. You'll also be proactive and self-sufficient enough to take ownership of your own work, from planning and testing through to handing it over into day-to-day support, staying calm and organised when things get busy.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
