We are seeking an experienced Indirect Tax Manager to join our finance team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing sales and use tax, multi-state tax filings, and assisting with other related tax areas. (The company has filing obligations in most states.) This position requires a highly organized and detail-oriented individual with a strong background in multi-state and sales & use tax, and is committed to meeting deadlines but able to pivot and prioritize as needed. This role reports to the Director of Tax & Treasury.

This role is hybrid, and required to be onsite 3 days a week in our Winston Salem, NC office.

Essential Functions

  • Lead the company’s indirect tax function, including multistate sales & use tax compliance, gross receipts taxes, and related business licenses.
  • Manage data collection and preparation to ensure accurate and timely filing of state & local sales & use tax returns, including oversight of registrations, tax notices, account maintenance, and external service providers.
  • Work with outside firms for the preparation and filing of all tax returns, including federal, state, and local income taxes, sales and use taxes, and other business taxes.
  • Oversee the end-to-end transaction tax cycle ensuring proper remittance and reconciliation of sales & use tax accounts in the General Ledger.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret state and local tax laws and translate technical conclusions into practical business guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with multi-state tax laws and regulations, including nexus determination and apportionment analysis.
  • Monitor nexus exposure and manage new state and local tax registrations as the company grows organically and through acquisitions.
  • Manage tax audits and inquiries from various tax authorities and provide support in tax controversy matters.
  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax benefits in conjunction with our outside firm.
  • Provide tax due diligence support for acquisitions, identifying tax exposures and integration requirements ahead of close.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments and analyze their impact on the company's operations and financial position.
  • Develop and implement processes and controls to ensure compliance with sales and use tax regulations.
  • Own the collection, validation, and audit-readiness of sales and use tax exemption certificates across customers and jurisdictions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address sales and use tax implications of business transactions and initiatives.
  • Provide guidance and training to the finance team and other departments on sales and use tax matters.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including accounting, legal, and operations, to ensure effective integration of tax considerations into business processes and decision-making.
  • Communicate complex tax matters effectively to senior management and other stakeholders.
  • Other relative duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or advanced degree (e.g., MST, MBA) preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in tax, including significant multi-state and sales and use tax experience; prior experience leading a team preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of tax laws and regulations, with particular depth in multi-state and sales and use tax.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience owning or administering an indirect tax technology platform, preferably Avalara, and supporting tax configurations within an ERP system.
  • Utilize AI-driven tools and workflows to streamline processes, automate tasks, and improve overall performance.

Physical Demands

Work Environment
This position is a hybrid role and requires coming into the office 3-4 days each week. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. This position operates in both a professional office setting and a warehouse environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment, including computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Occasional travel to project sites may be required. Warehouse conditions include proximity to forklifts and other heavy machinery and the use of various tools and hardware. Employees may be subject to frequent heavy lifting and exposure to variable weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
