Position Overview The Industrial Hygiene Technician supports the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Center of Excellence (COE) function by assisting in the identification, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards within Hexion’s chemical manufacturing environment and Research and Development (R&D) laboratories. This role conducts exposure monitoring, maintains sampling and direct-reading equipment, collects and documents data, and supports regulatory compliance initiatives to help ensure a safe and healthy workplace for employees and contractors. Key Responsibilities Conduct personal and area air monitoring and sampling for process operators, maintenance personnel, laboratory employees, and contractors for chemical vapors, dusts, mists, and other airborne contaminants. (25%) Perform noise dosimetry, sound level measurements, heat stress monitoring, ventilation assessments, and ergonomic evaluations in manufacturing, warehouse, terminal, laboratory, and maintenance work areas. (15%) Utilize, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial hygiene sampling equipment and direct-reading instruments, including PID monitors, multi-gas meters, particulate monitors, sound level meters, and noise dosimeters. (15%) Spend significant field time identifying occupational health hazards, verifying exposure controls, and supporting practical recommendations with operations, maintenance, engineering, and EHS teams. (15%) Support industrial hygiene activities during maintenance outages, catalyst changeouts, vessel entry activities, contractor-intensive projects, and other non-routine work. (10%) Maintain exposure monitoring databases and assist in preparation of employee exposure notifications, industrial hygiene records, monitoring reports, and regulatory documentation. (10%) Support occupational health programs including respiratory protection, hearing conservation, heat stress prevention, hazard communication, medical surveillance, training, and incident investigations related to actual or potential occupational exposures. (10%) Attributes Active, engaged member of the EHS team who interacts effectively with associates remotely and in the field. 40-60% Domestic Travel (United States and Canada). 10-15% International Travel. Education & Experience Education: Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field. Years of Experience: 2-5 years of experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health, or EHS in a manufacturing environment preferred. Industrial chemical industry or oil and gas refinery experience is preferred, and a combination of formal health and safety training will be considered. Experience using industrial hygiene sampling equipment and direct-reading instrumentation preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations and exposure limits, including OSHA PELs and ACGIH TLVs. Willingness to obtain or actively pursue CIH designation. Experience, skills and knowledge: Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment and be self-directed at times. Ability to work around process equipment, noise, heat, confined spaces, and chemical handling activities. Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators. Working knowledge of respiratory protection, hearing conservation, heat stress prevention, hazard communication, and medical surveillance programs. Ability to communicate monitoring results, field observations, and practical control recommendations to site personnel and EHS leadership. Effective written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of exposure records, employee notifications, monitoring reports, and supporting documentation. Physical Demands & Work Environment Regularly walk manufacturing facilities, laboratories, warehouses, terminals, and outdoor process areas while conducting inspections, exposure assessments, and occupational health evaluations. Frequently climb stairs, ladders, and elevated platforms to access operating equipment and work areas. Perform field activities requiring standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, and occasional work in confined or restricted-access spaces. Carry, set up, and transport industrial hygiene monitoring equipment and supplies weighing up to approximately 25 pounds. Work in environments that may include exposure to noise, heat, cold, humidity, chemical handling operations, and outdoor weather conditions while utilizing required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection. Travel routinely to manufacturing and research facilities throughout North America and internationally to support industrial hygiene and occupational health activities.
