Description of Duties:
We seek a temporary, part-time instructor with a background in the social sciences to teach one or more introductory high school courses in the Connect program.
Spring Semester - Contract Period: January 15, 2027 - May 19, 2027
Honors 21st Century Media Studies - Monday-Friday - 10:00 AM - 11:10 AM
The 21st Century Media Studies course is an interdisciplinary cultural studies course in which students examine and interpret the ways various media modes influence us. Students study media theory, analyze cultural and historical contexts, the aesthetics of a variety of formats, examine how forms have shifted, and investigate the relationship between media and reality, ways that media influences and changes our culture, and how responses to media change over time. The course considers a variety of critical approaches that include: cultural, psychoanalytic, feminist, and others. Through these approaches, students contemplate issues and problems considering such aspects as: technology, representations of reality, human meaning, identity politics, economics, self/other dynamics, gender/race/ethnicity, and community/belonging. This lens of analysis reverberates both within and outside of America.
The NCSSM Connect program offers live, synchronous virtual courses taught by NCSSM faculty to students in their local high schools across North Carolina. During class, Connect instructors use group activities and cutting-edge instructional technology to facilitate active participation, project-based learning, and cross-site collaboration with students from around the state. Students can interact with others from the mountains to the coast. Our NCSSM Connect program allows smaller, rural schools to offer AP and honors-level courses that may otherwise be unavailable.
The position reports to the Director of Instructional Leadership and is responsible for providing instruction for an NCSSM Connect distance-education humanities course via Zoom or other interactive videoconferencing platforms. Using a combination of a pre-developed curriculum, digital assets, and instructor-developed materials, the instructor will deliver the course live (synchronously) at one or more sites in North Carolina. Daily broadcasts will be seventy minutes long.
General duties include: developing and communicating to students clear course objectives and goals; planning and developing an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills; regularly monitoring and evaluating students' progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance; structuring and managing an environment conducive to learning; modeling for students responsibility to self and others; following the School's philosophy, policies, and procedures (including the pickup and return of loaned technology and other resources); participating in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities.
This position offers the option to work remotely.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Preferred experience includes teaching in the humanities or a related field, preferably with secondary students or undergraduates at the freshman/sophomore level, and a commitment to engaging gifted and motivated students in virtual, synchronous instruction.
Enthusiasm for student-centered, hands-on labs or projects, and familiarity with educational technology to deliver interactive synchronous remote courses. Preparation for teaching in an online environment, as demonstrated by training or experience.
