About the Role

Do you love science but feel that a career at the bench isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about scientific research? Do you enjoy reading papers outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any or all these questions, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the Nature Portfolio editorial team.

To help us build on the success of the portfolio, we’re seeking an Editor with experience in biomedical imaging or genome engineering who has a critical eye, a deep understanding of their subject and interests beyond, and who can think on their feet. Broader knowledge in gene therapy is desirable although we are open to applications from all biomedical engineers.

As Interim Associate or Senior Editor, you will handle manuscripts in all areas of bioengineering and biomedical engineering research, particularly imaging and image analysis or genome engineering and gene therapy. You will participate in the daily life of the Nature Biomedical Engineering team and contribute significantly to editorial activities and (as appropriate) to the publishing activities of Nature Biomedical Engineering.

This role is offered on a maternity cover basis and can be based in our London or Pune offices on a hybrid working model.  The locations strategy supports team structure and aligns business needs.

Role responsibilities:

  • Select and reject manuscripts for publication, within the framework of current editorial policy, demonstrating scientific comprehension and evaluation as well as decision quality
  • Cover for absent colleagues or lack of special knowledge in the editorial team, showing strong collaboration
  • Strengthen Nature Biomedical Engineering reputation in the scientific community by fostering good relationships with researchers, communicating and collaborating effectively
  • Where agreed, take responsibility for the development of a broad subject area
  • Where agreed, define topics for Perspective and Review Articles, assessing proposals from potential authors of such articles, handling the resulting manuscripts and improving them via effective editing, using scientific and academic writing skills
  • Help other members of the team in handling manuscripts, and participate in the training and evolution of the team, using interpersonal awareness and collaboration
  • Active participation in planning an effective publishing strategy for authors; where agreed, taking responsibility for the journals input into technological and operational developments, demonstrating operational excellence
  • Develop and maintain effective and productive relations with other members of staff, including other Nature journal editors, editorial assistants, and other relevant departments, such as Author Services.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with commercial colleagues, including advice to marketing and advertising departments and making constructive suggestions for sponsored projects.

Experience, Skills, & Qualifications:

Essential

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in biomedical engineering or related discipline.
  • A passion for science and a thirst to learn more.
  • Broad interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your specialty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative environment.

Desirable

  • Postdoctoral experience preferred but not required
  • Experience in biomedical imaging or genome editing would be a bonus
  • Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for Senior Editor positions.

To apply, please submit:

  • A CV
  • A brief cover letter explaining your interest for the position
  • a ‘Research Highlight’ of no more than 300 words on an intriguing paper published in the last 3 months.
