We are looking for a Senior Energy Efficiency Engineer to join our Buildings team in Ottawa. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering energy audits, energy management, building optimization, commissioning and recommissioning, energy efficiency studies, and decarbonization projects for institutional, commercial, municipal, and federal government clients throughout the National Capital Region and across Canada.

The position will combine hands-on technical analysis with site investigations, building systems assessment, energy conservation measure (ECM) development, commissioning, client interaction, and project management. The successful candidate will work closely with CIMA+'s mechanical, electrical, controls, sustainability, and building performance specialists to identify and implement practical solutions for existing buildings.

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead and perform energy audits and building performance assessments, including ASHRAE Level 1 and Level 2 energy audits and detailed investigations of building systems.
• Conduct site investigations and assess existing HVAC, hydronic, plumbing, electrical, lighting, controls/BAS, and other energy-consuming systems.
• Analyze utility bills, interval data, submetering data, BAS trends, equipment operating data, and building operating schedules to identify energy-saving and operational improvement opportunities.
• Identify, develop, and evaluate energy conservation measures (ECMs) related to HVAC optimization, controls, heat recovery, electrification, heat pumps, lighting, envelope improvements, equipment replacement, and operational improvements.
• Perform engineering calculations to quantify energy, demand, operating cost, and greenhouse gas savings associated with proposed measures.
• Support energy management programs, including energy performance tracking, benchmarking, energy action plans, ongoing monitoring, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Lead and support commissioning, recommissioning, and retro-commissioning activities, including functional performance testing, BAS and control sequence reviews, trend analysis, deficiency identification, and verification of corrective actions.
• Review building automation system sequences and operating strategies and develop recommendations to improve equipment scheduling, setpoints, reset strategies, ventilation, temperature control, and overall system performance.
• Support measurement and verification (M&V) activities to confirm the performance and savings of implemented energy efficiency measures.
• Develop building decarbonization and electrification strategies, including evaluation of heat pumps, heat recovery, hybrid heating systems, thermal energy systems, and associated electrical infrastructure requirements.
• Support energy modelling and building performance simulation activities and interpret modelling results to inform retrofit and capital planning decisions.
• Perform technical and economic evaluations of energy efficiency projects, including implementation costs, simple payback, lifecycle cost analysis, and prioritization of measures.
• Prepare energy audit reports, feasibility studies, commissioning reports, technical memoranda, presentations, and implementation roadmaps.
• Work directly with clients, facility managers, building operators, contractors, controls specialists, and multidisciplinary design teams to understand operational challenges and develop practical solutions.
• Support implementation of recommended measures through design, tender, construction, commissioning, and post-implementation verification where required.
• Manage projects and coordinate scope, budget, schedule, deliverables, and multidisciplinary resources.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, EITs, analysts, and technologists.
• Support proposals, fee estimates, client presentations, project pursuits, and business development activities.
• Contribute to CIMA+'s technical standards, quality management processes, and development of energy efficiency and building performance services across Canada.

• University degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario or eligible to obtain it.
• 5 + years of relevant experience in energy efficiency, building systems, commissioning, energy management, or mechanical engineering. Candidates with greater experience are also encouraged to apply.
• Demonstrated experience performing building energy audits, energy efficiency studies, commissioning/recommissioning, or existing-building performance assessments.
• Strong understanding of HVAC systems, central heating and cooling plants, hydronic systems, ventilation systems, heat recovery, and building automation/control systems.
• Experience identifying and evaluating energy conservation measures and calculating associated energy, cost, and GHG savings.
• Experience analyzing utility consumption, interval data, BAS trend data, and building operating characteristics.
• Knowledge of ASHRAE energy audit and commissioning practices, applicable energy codes, building codes, and industry standards.
• Experience with building automation systems and HVAC control sequences is strongly preferred.
• Experience with energy management systems, benchmarking, measurement and verification, or continuous energy improvement programs is considered an asset.
• Experience with electrification, heat pumps, heat recovery, low-carbon heating systems, and building decarbonization is considered an asset.
• Experience with energy modelling software and/or building performance simulation is considered an asset.
• Professional certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP), Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), commissioning-related credentials, or equivalent are considered assets.
• Experience working with institutional, commercial, municipal, or federal government building portfolios is considered an asset.
• Strong technical report writing and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in understanding how buildings actually operate and identifying practical opportunities for improvement.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and work independently while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Bilingualism in English and French, both written and spoken, is strongly asset.
• Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain the level of security clearance required for assigned projects.
• Valid Canadian driver's licence and access to transportation for site investigations, commissioning activities, and inspections.
