We are looking for an experienced Intermediate or Senior Quantity Surveyor to support our client, an established professional Quantity Surveying and property consultancy based in Sydney, Australia.
This opportunity is ideal for a Quantity Surveyor with strong experience in construction cost planning, estimating, quantity take-offs, cost reporting, progress claims, variations, tendering, and contract administration.
Candidates with direct Australian Quantity Surveying experience are highly preferred. However, applicants with strong Quantity Surveying experience and skills that are transferable to Australian construction and property projects are also encouraged to apply.
Experience within a professional Quantity Surveying consultancy, building consultancy, cost consultancy, or similar client-facing environment will be highly regarded.
Full-time, part-time, and project-based applicants are welcome.
The Role
You will work closely with the client’s Quantity Surveying team and provide cost management and professional Quantity Surveying support across different stages of construction and property projects.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Preparing detailed construction cost estimates and cost plans
- Undertaking quantity take-offs and measurement from construction drawings and specifications
- Preparing or reviewing Bills of Quantities
- Supporting project feasibility assessments and preliminary cost estimates
- Reviewing architectural, structural, civil, and other construction documentation
- Preparing cost reports and professional Quantity Surveying documentation
- Assessing contractor progress claims and completed works
- Reviewing and assessing variations, additional works, and associated costs
- Assisting with cost-to-complete assessments and project cost monitoring
- Supporting financier progress reports and construction cost reporting
- Assisting with Council development cost estimates and Estimated Development Cost reports
- Supporting Building Replacement Insurance and Insurance Reinstatement Cost assessments
- Reviewing tender submissions and assisting with tender evaluation
- Supporting procurement and contract administration activities
- Assisting with contract documentation and post-tender cost management
- Identifying potential project cost risks and providing appropriate cost recommendations
- Communicating and coordinating with clients, architects, consultants, builders, contractors, developers, and other project stakeholders
- Maintaining accurate project documentation, calculations, and supporting records
- Managing assigned projects and deliverables within agreed timelines
- Establishing and maintaining strong professional client relationships
- Contributing to the continued growth and development of the client’s business
- Supporting and mentoring junior team members where required
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, you should have:
- Degree qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Construction Economics, Civil Engineering, Property, or a related discipline
- Strong professional experience in Quantity Surveying, estimating, cost planning, construction cost management, or a closely related role
- Demonstrated experience preparing construction estimates, quantity take-offs, cost plans, or Bills of Quantities
- Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
- Experience assessing progress claims, variations, quantities, and construction costs
- Good understanding of construction methods, materials, sequencing, and project delivery
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to prepare clear and professional written reports
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
- Ability to communicate professionally with clients, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders
- Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and competing priorities
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with the wider team
- Strong work ethic, initiative, accountability, and self-motivation
Highly Regarded Experience
The following experience will be highly regarded but is not mandatory for all applicants:
- Previous experience working with an Australian Quantity Surveying or construction consultancy
- Experience supporting Australian residential, commercial, or property development projects
- Professional Quantity Surveying consultancy or client-side cost management experience
- Detailed elemental cost planning
- Builders Bills of Quantities
- Tender assessment and procurement
- Contract administration and cost management
- Progress claim assessment and payment recommendations
- Variation assessment and negotiation
- Financier or lender construction progress reporting
- Cost-to-complete assessments
- Council Development Application cost reports or Estimated Development Cost reports
- Building Replacement Insurance Reports or Insurance Reinstatement Cost assessments
- Experience preparing professional client-facing Quantity Surveying reports
- Familiarity with Australian construction terminology, documentation, standards, and industry practices
Direct Australian experience is highly preferred, but not mandatory. Candidates with strong international Quantity Surveying experience and highly transferable skills are encouraged to apply.
Preferred Project Background
Candidates with experience across one or more of the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply:
- Residential construction and developments
- Commercial buildings
- Mixed-use developments
- Building construction
- Property development
- Refurbishment and renovation projects
- Infrastructure or civil projects with strong cost management and Quantity Surveying responsibilities
Candidates whose experience has primarily been in infrastructure, engineering, or contractor-side Quantity Surveying may also be considered where they can demonstrate strong transferable experience in estimating, cost planning, claims, variations, tendering, reporting, and client or consultant coordination.
For Senior-Level Applicants
Senior candidates should also demonstrate:
- Strong project and cost management capabilities
- Ability to independently manage assigned projects and deliverables
- Ability to review the work of other Quantity Surveyors
- Strong client and stakeholder management skills
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to identify commercial and project cost risks
- Experience supporting or mentoring junior staff
- Strong commercial awareness and professional judgement
- Ability to contribute to team performance and client relationship development
