About Us
We are a world-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre. We use the Museum's unique collections and our unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.
Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.
We employ 1100 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.
This is an exciting time to join the Museum as we have secured investment from the UK Government to build a new science and digitisation centre at Thames Valley Science Park, University of Reading. The purpose-built centre will house much of the Museum's collection and will include laboratories, digitisation suites, collaborative research spaces, conservation labs and workspaces employing innovative digital, analytical and genomic technologies and facilities.
Diversity and inclusion matter to us.
Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.
We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.
About The Role
Please note: this role will primarily be based at Thames Valley Science Park, near Reading, with regular travel to South Kensington expected.
The Museum's enterprise IT function, Technology Solutions (TS), is a team of around 60 core staff which is evolving its operations towards a cloud-based, service-based operating model. TS provides secure and resilient technology services across the Museum and works with colleagues and partners to enable research, collections, visitor and corporate outcomes.
The IT Duty Manager is the senior on-site TS operational lead for the Thames Valley Science Park (TVSP) site in Reading. The post holder will be accountable for the day-to-day coordination of IT and AV service delivery, acting as the single point of ownership for local incidents, service requests, planned changes, operational readiness and the overall technology support experience.
Initially, the role will be the single TS colleague based at TVSP and hold responsibility for coordinating changes, maintenance and outages affecting the TVSP site, ensuring impacts, risks and rollout plans are managed and understood. The role leads the local response to incidents, major incidents and service disruptions, coordinates suppliers and stakeholders, manages local support resources, and ensures service delivery aligns with TS policies, governance and standards. This role leads the local response to incidents, major incidents and service disruptions, coordinates suppliers and stakeholders, manages local support resources, and ensures service delivery aligns with TS policies, governance and standards.
Although primarily based at TVSP, the role forms part of the wider TS team and is expected to attend South Kensington regularly for collaboration, meetings and team activities, as well as supporting other Museum sites when required.
About You
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated IT Service Operations leader to play a key role in delivering reliable, customer-focused technology services across a diverse and complex environment. You will lead the response to incidents and major incidents, working closely with support teams, suppliers and stakeholders to minimise disruption and maintain service excellence.
With strong ITIL knowledge and broad technical expertise spanning Microsoft 365, cloud platforms, networking, identity management and end-user computing, you'll help drive operational performance and continuous improvement. You'll also develop and support technical staff, manage supplier relationships and ensure robust operational processes and documentation are in place. Experience within public sector, higher education, research or cultural organisations, together with exposure to technologies such as Azure, AWS, Intune, Entra ID and Halo, would be advantageous.
